Visit Mondesa township with a local on a half-day tour that’s a personalized introduction to the community: you’ll walk through the township market, join locals for a beer, eat lunch in a family home, and watch a Mondesa choir perform. The most impoverished part of Swakopmund, Mondesa is a world away from the city’s tourist sites, but taking in the township alongside a local ensures a rich—and respectful—experience.

Highlights

  • Go beyond sightseeing to see local culture
  • Enjoy Mondesa flavors with an included lunch
  • Learn to pronounce some words from the Damara ‘click’ language
  • Convenient pickup and drop-off at Swakopmund hotels

Swakopmund is a coastal city in Namibia, west of the capital, Windhoek. Its sandy beaches face the Atlantic Ocean. Established by German colonists in 1892, the city’s colonial landmarks include the Swakopmund Lighthouse and the Mole, an old sea wall. Next to the lighthouse, the Swakopmund Museum documents Namibian history. Inland, the elegant Swakopmund Railway Station, now a hotel, also dates to the colonial era.

Pass By: Swakopmund Museum, Strand Street, Swakopmund Namibia

Swakopmund is one of those great traveller way stations along the African road. At once Namibia's adventure capital and a surreal colonial remnant, part destination in its own right and part launch pad for an exploration of the Skeleton Coast and Namib Desert, this is a city with as much personality as it has sea frontage. Like Lüderitz on the south coast, with its half-timbered German architecture, seaside promenades and pervasive Gemütlichkeit (a distinctively German appreciation of comfort and hospitality), Swakopmund, especially out of season, can feel like a holiday town along Germany’s North Sea and Baltic coasts transplanted onto African soil. But the city is also thoroughly African and its multidimensional appeal means that most people end up staying longer than they planned.
