Chiang Mai National Museum Tours

Chiang Mai National Museum
History buffs won’t want to miss the Chiang Mai National Museum, which houses an impressive collection of Lanna artifacts from throughout Northern Thailand. The museum is divided into six sections covering topics such as ancient settlements in Chiang Mai, geography and ecology, the Lanna Kingdom, Lanna fine art, and life in modern Chiang Mai.

The Basics
A visit to the Chiang Mai National Museum is an excellent way to kick off a visit to Chiang Mai, as it offers an orientation to the city from prehistoric times through the 20th century. After a 2017 renovation, many of the museum’s displays now include English explanations. Despite its excellent collection and recent updates, the museum lies a bit off the beaten tourist path. Only a few sightseeing tours stop there, often with other hidden gems such as the Somphet Market and Lanna Architecture Center.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • The Chiang Mai National Museum is a must-visit for history buffs and first-time visitors.
  • Give yourself about an hour to tour the collection.
  • Remember to bring cash to pay the entrance fee, as credit cards are not accepted.
  • Lockers are available by the ticket desk for bags and cameras.

How to Get There
The Chiang Mai National Museum is located on the Chiang Mai–Lampang Superhighway near Wat Jed Yot. The best way to get there from the old city is to hire a tuk-tuk or taxi.

When to Get There
The Chiang Mai National Museum is open Wednesday to Sunday from 9am to 4pm. The underrated museum rarely gets busy, making it a good option for weekends, especially during peak season.

What’s Nearby
If you’re visiting the Chiang Mai National Museum independently, plan to spend a few hours in the area exploring some of the other nearby attractions. Wat Jet Yot, built in the 15th century, is known for its stucco bas-reliefs and seven spires. Head behind the museum and you’ll find the Chinese Cemetery, a peaceful spot dotted with ornate gravestones.
