Do you know that Nagoya was once the center base of Samurai culture? During the Sengoku period in the 16th century when Samurai played an active role, the Owari district including Nagoya is known as the place where the most famous “Sengoku Daimyo”, powerful Japanese feudal lord, were from, such as “Oda Nobunaga”, “Toyotomi Hideyoshi” and “Tokugawa Ieyasu”. Why don’t you experience Japanese culture such as Japanese calligraphy and tea ceremony with English in a Kominka house in the city of Samurai culture “Nagoya”? Washi paper making in the craftworker's place in Mino

This experience tour lets you make Japanese paper (washi) in an atelier that’s actually used by craftworkers. Create your own customized washi by taking advantage of the thin but sturdy quality of Minowashi paper, adding decorations in the spaces and see-through parts in the paper and so on. Washi works well as a book cover, among other things, Minowashi paper is a traditional craftwork product with a 1,300-year history. With an abundance of pure waters, the Makidani region of Mino city once touted an array of 1,000 washi manufacturers as the “homeland of washi”; but only around ten washi manufacturers remain who produce this paper for a living. You’ll get the chance to delve into this deep world of washi, in which it is said that the side of the river bank where one gets the water to make the paper, not to mention the mood of the craftworker both become evident in the paper that they make.

A beginner's guide of the world of Japanese swords Katana

You’ll be sure to be taken in by the power of the Japanese katana as you hold it in your hands, learn to wield it and discover the important points about what to look for. There’s also a “name-engraving experience,” where you can etch your name into a small blade. Even visitors who aren’t interested in swords are sure to see the katana in a different light after this experience. Katana swordsmiths made their beginning in Seki during the Kamakura era. In Seki, the high-quality water drawn from Nagara River, not to mention soil and charcoal can be easily obtained, which was the impetus for more than 300 swordsmiths to offer their services here during the Muromachi era. The traditional skills of these swordsmiths have been passed down to the present day, and Seki is now one of the few cities in the world where katanas are made.

The thread stitching with the geometric patterns for Gifu Wagasa,Paper umbrella

On this experience tour, participants can try the thread stitching techniques used to make the delicate flowers made of string bloom, which are found on the inside of Japanese umbrellas (wagasa). Pass the threads through the holes found in the bamboo ribs of the umbrella for decoration and for reinforcement. You can choose the color of umbrella that you like, and take it home right after you’re finished. Around nine out of 10 of the Japanese umbrellas made in Japan are produced in Gifu. From the Meiji era to the second decade of the Showa era, more than one million wagasa were made, owing to the fact that the Nagara River region is a bountiful source of Japanese paper and of bamboo forests. Although the number of wagasa craftworkers has dwindled and the materials are harder to come by, new craftworkers have come onto the scene to carry on the tradition.
