Deutsches Museum Tours

Deutsches Museum
Overview
Billed as the world’s largest technology museum, the Deutsches Museum is so vast that it takes over an entire island in the center of Munich. Six floors of exhibitions are devoted to topics like aviation, energy, and natural science, with hands-on displays and activities that make it fun and educational for all ages.

The Basics

Museum visitors can learn through experimenting at interactive exhibits like a space laboratory, a flight simulator, giant musical instruments, and model coal and salt mines. Families with children flock to a Kid’s Kingdom featuring a child-sized mouse wheel, a real fire engine, and other climbing-friendly displays.

Admission tickets also include access to the museum’s two other buildings. The nearby Verkehrszentrum houses the Transport Museum, showcasing historic tram and train wagons, while the Flugwerft Schleißheim at Oberschleissheim Airfield displays an impressive aircraft collection.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Admission tickets include all exhibitions; planetarium shows are charged separately.
  • Children under age 6 are free.
  • Museum amenities include a gift shop, a restaurant, two cafés, and a picnic area.
  • Free Wi-Fi is available in the museum courtyard.
  • Staff present live demonstrations on crafts like glass-blowing and paper-making.
  • The museum is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
How to Get There
The Deutsches Museum is located on Museuminsel (Museum Island) along the Isar River in central Munich. It is connected by bridge to the mainland and about a 10-minute walk from Marienplatz. Via public transit, take the S-Bahn to Isartor station or the number 17 tram to the Deutsches Museum stop.

When to Get There

Get an early start to make the most of your visit, as one could easily spend several days exploring the massive collection. During the Long Night of Museums in October, the museum stays open past midnight and hosts special events.

Munich’s Top Museums
After immersing yourself in science at the Deutsches Museum, head to the Munich City Museum to dive into Bavaria’s history and cultural heritage. Visit the BMW Museum to marvel over priceless motors, or stop by the Beer and Oktoberfest Museum to experience the city’s most famous festiva any time of year. For art lovers, the Alte Pinakothek features works by El Greco, Rembrandt, and Raphael; while the neighboring Neue Pinakothek houses modern masters such as Picasso, Renoir, and Monet.
Address: Museumsinsel 1, Munich 80538, Germany
Admission: Day ticket: Adult: 8.50 EUR, Child: 3 EUR
