Pinnacles Desert
Although otherworldly in appearance, the Pinnacles Desert is 100 percent on planet earth, located along the Indian Ocean's Coral Coast in Nambung National Park in Western Australia (WA). This vast sandy expanse is filled with towering limestone pillars, and at only a few hours' drive from the city of Perth, the site makes for a popular and totally doable day trip.

The Basics
To the Pinnacles, and beyond! Most day tours combine a visit to the 35,000-year-old limestone formations with stops at other popular attractions in the area, making it easy to heed the siren call of nearby massive sand dunes, white sandy beaches, and even a lobster farm. Nature lovers can catch sight of kangaroos, koalas, and wombats on tours that stop at Caversham Wildlife Park and Yanchep National Park, while adrenaline junkies love adventure-packed tour options that include revving up a 4WD vehicle or sand boarding across the Lancelin sand dunes, some of which stretch up to 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) wide.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • Most day tours provide round-trip transportation from Perth and last roughly 10 hour.
  • Tours to the Pinnacles are kid-friendly with outdoor activities and wildlife viewing.
  • Travelers should dress in layers and wear plenty of sun protection.
  • For both private tours and small-group tours, upgrades are dependent upon group size.
  • Fuel a long day of exploration with a meal in the coastal town of Cervantes (included in some tours), where you can get a behind-the-scenes look at the local lobster fishing industry and chow down on a picnic lunch, Aussie style barbecue, or a sausage sizzle lunch.

How to Get to the Pinnacles
Nambung National Park is a 2- to 3-hour drive from Perth along Indian Ocean Drive, making it an easy day trip from the city. The Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre is open daily from 9:30am to 4:30pm and can provide insightful information about the park.

When to Go There
The best time to visit is spring (September to October) when Western Australia's native wildflowers paint the desert with vibrant colors. Book a sunset tour to see a light show across the Pinnacles, or maximize your time by heading out early in the morning; you'll want the extra time to explore the many parks and beaches along the way.

Pinnacles Desert (Private) Day Tour

Pinnacles Desert (Private) Day Tour

This private tour is available to a maximum of 7 people only. The most important thing about this tour is that you manage the time you have, to spend on the things you want. The Pinnacles Desert is an amazing landscape which offers a unique backdrop for photography of friends and family or simply a beautiful unique desert location. The Desert Discovery centre also offers geological and indigenous information about the unique landscape and offers Souvenir options. A number of stops either on the way to the Desert or on the return journey add to the day tour, subject to time availability. Not all these are possible in a day so contact me to discuss. *The sleepy seaside town of Two Rocks which has a colourful history and a giant King Neptune statue... * Lancelin Sand Dunes for sights &/or sand boarding *The town of Yanchep which has a Koala & Kangaroo wildlife park. * The historic Monastic town of New Norcia offers fascinating local history.

Prepare for a day full of adventure. Our final destination, The PINNACLES DESERT, is 200 km North of Perth. Our first stop will be Yanchep Lagoon. The calm and clear water, beautiful beach, with the reef close by, makes this a perfect start to our tour. Our next stopover is Yanchep National Park, home to western grey kangaroos and rich birdlife. The park also has a raised boardwalk among trees inhabited by koalas. Crystal Cave, located within Yanchep National Park, is an underground wonderland full of natural structures including stalagmites, stalactites, columns and flowstones. Next stop is the town of Guilderton, where Moore River meets the Indian Ocean. Pelicans often frequent this beautiful location and the sea is usually turquoise in colour. This stunning place is where we will be having our lunch (sandwiches, snacks and drinks) . We will reach our final destination around 2:30pm and we will have plenty of time to explore the Pinnacles.

On this tour we go to places that others don't. At Yanchep Lagoon we photograph a unique rockpool which has been formed by a close to shore reef. We then go to Gingin which is a historical down with interesting old buildings and a paper bark and bush walkway. As we head to the Pinnacles we stop along the way as we see things of photographic interest arriving in time before the sunset to photograph the pinnacles as the light changes. After dark, weather permitting, we will stop in the area for Astro photography.
