3 Days in Salzburg: Suggested Itineraries

4,725 Reviews
Sitting on the Salzach River near the Bavarian Alps, Salzburg draws visitors with its gorgeous landscape, ornate cathedrals, and musical history, featuring Mozart and The Sound of Music. Here’s how to spend three days in this corner of Austria.

Day 1: Learn About Mozart and Local History
If the hills around Salzburg are alive with the sound of music, then the city is alive with the memory of Mozart's birth and adolescent residency here. Visit the composer's birthplace, where he lived for 17 years, to see the preservation of the home-turned-museum and get a glimpse of a few of the young musician's instruments. Afterward, try Mozart chocolate balls, a delicious local snack. Then head over to Old Town to see the beautiful churches, such as the Franziskanerkirche and the Kollegienkirche, each with their own story.

Day 2: Experience The Sound of Music
For many people, the greatest musical draw to Salzburg is The Sound of Music. Tours are a fun way to experience the popular musical (tour groups are known to break into song)—you'll be taken to the Von Trapp house, the boating lake, and the cathedral where Julie Andrews' character tied the knot with Mr. Von Trapp. If you still find yourself wanting more, visit Salzburg's puppet show in the evening to see a re-enactment of the film with all of the original songs.

Day 3: Head to the Alps
Salzburg is conveniently located very close to the Lake District of the Alps, renowned for its picturesque towns and scenic landscape. Visitors can also get in a bit of history by visiting the Eagle's Nest, known as Adolf Hitler's 5,000-foot-high (1,524-meter-high) hideout, and the area's salt mines, which provided Salzburg with most of its income for many years.
