The City Hall of Montevideo made official since 1956 the Llamadas Parade, a parade of Comparsas de Negros y Lubolos (Candombe groups). Its name comes from the colonial era, and represents the call made by Afro-descendants brought as slaves when they began to meet, whether for festive activities or to deal with certain social issues. It was customary for a couple of drums from each group to go out to tour the streets playing candombe and that way they would begin to put together the group to go together to celebrate the Carnival. Each comparsa is formed by at least 50 drums, with its three types: chico, repique and piano; a dance group and a great variety of characters that symbolize all the African tradition and culture that this popular Uruguayan show has behind.
