Complete your Athens bucket list in just half a day on a private 4-hour sightseeing tour by car. In addition to the UNESCO listed Acropolis and its world-famous museum, you also visit the Temple of Zeus, Panathenaic Stadium, and Mount Lycabettus. Between attractions, your knowledgeable driver provides in-depth information on every location so you're ready to explore the archaeological sites independently.
We arranged for a 2:00 tour after being assured it would give us enough time to go to the museum. After stopping at a few sites - the Olympic stadium, the university, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier we were dropped off at the Acropolis at 4:00. We were told to visit the ruins for an hour and then head to the museum. When we got to the museum as instructed it was closed. It turned out to be an expensive taxi ride with the driver being continuously on the phone . We booked the tour as we only had part of a day in Athens and were concerned about getting around. We would suggest just calling a taxi from your hotel and going straight to the Acropolis and then making your way around on foot with a phone app.
Our guide, Ilias, picked us up at our hotel and took us straight to the entrance of Acropolis. It was great not to have to deal with the hassle of a tour bus, parking a vehicle, etc. We planned for him to pick us up approximately 1.5-2 hours later (he gave us his # so we could text him) and were otherwise on our own.
Our family (2 adults and our daughters, 12 and 14), visited everything at the Acropolis. We planned to visit the museum as well -but it was SO hot and crowded (literally 100* and people everywhere), we actually skedaddled back down, bought some water, and waited in the shade before asking Ilias to pick us up! (He arrived immediately.)
From there, he drove us around Athens and provided us the opportunity to get out and look at many sites: the Temple of Zeus, Hadrian’s Arch, the Academy of Athens, the Olympic stadium, and the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He provided us with ice-cold bottled water and helpful background information as well. I suspect, had we wanted to spend longer at any individual site, we could have... We felt that we could largely dictate the "terms" of the tour. There was at least one other site to which Ilias would have taken us, but given that we were so exhausted and needed to catch a flight to Crete, he took us to the airport instead (for an additional, reasonable fee, arranged ahead of time). We were grateful!
This tour was particularly good for us because we did not want to spend very long at any one place - both because it was hot/crowded, and because we had just arrived in Athens from Toronto the day before and were absolutely exhausted (3/4 of us actually fell asleep in the car!). Our desire was to check out the sites around Athens only briefly (for 5 minutes or so rather than spending, say, 30 minutes at each) so we could have a feel for the city and its history. We have done many tours before - on huge tour buses, with a private guide who accompanied us to every site, etc. and have enjoyed those as well... This was not one of those, and it was just right for our purposes. We wanted convenience, comfort, and air-conditioning - and we got exactly that!
The only thing we would have changed (we didn't know this until we arrived, so it certainly isn't the fault of the tour) was at the Acropolis, we wished we knew more about the sites. Next time, we'd invest in an audio tour or similar, so we could go at our own pace but still know what we were looking at. All in all: highly recommend!
