Why Travelers Choose This Tour
This Mutianyu Great Wall tour includes an exclusive picnic lunch inside an ancient tower—complete with wine.
Your day starts with hotel pickup in Beijing followed by a drive of approximately 1-hour drive to reach the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall.
The World Heritage-listed Great Wall was constructed more than 2,500 years ago to protect the Chinese from fierce northern tribes. Considered one of the greatest engineering feats in human history, the vast wall wall extends over mountains and plateaus, deserts and grasslands, stretching an astounding 5,550 miles (8,850 km) across China.
During this exclusive experience, you'll get away from the crowds by visiting the Mutianyu section, an authentic part of the wall that has not been fully restored except for safety precautions. On a nearly-empty part of the monumental walkway, take an easy hike suited to varying fitness levels, with stopping frequently to take photos and rest along the way.
All along the Great Wall, imposing stone watchtowers stand tall above the landscape. Sit down for your lovely picnic lunch inside one of these well-preserved watchtowers — an exclusive experience that’s only available with this tour. Sip chilled sparkling wine paired with popular local dishes as you enjoy views over the countryside. (See sample menu under Itinerary below.)
Your guide shares the history of this masterpiece and describes how the Great Wall outposts controlled the borders and regulated traffic along the Silk Road. When you have finished your lunch at and tour at Mutianyu, your guide returns you to your Beijing hotel where your tour ends.
Another option is to ask your guide to drop you off at 798 Art Zone, located in northwest Beijing. The enormous 1950s factory has been transformed into an arts center, with galleries, studios, museums, boutiques, cafés and bars. Take a look around and enjoy a drink or dinner at a local restaurant before making your own way back to Beijing.
This was an amazing day and unforgettable experience. James, my guide, is very kind and helpful, gave me a lot of precious info and history and was always ready to meet my needs and fulfil my requests. He even offered to help me organize my evening plan, after the tour, which was not part of what he was supposed to do. I took the stairs to go to the Great Wall, a good exercise. James met me in one of the watching towers and introduced me to this unbelievable construction and its history. We paused for wine and the lunch, then I stayed an additional hour to take some extra photos. James has suggested and taken some fantastic photos of me that my friends have enjoyed. I can only say: DO IT!
Fantastic day trip to see the Great Wall, and our guide was excellent, very knowledgeable and with terrific English. We favoured Mutianyu for the chairlift, rather than climbing the stairs, and we got to spend more than an hour exploring the wall at our own pace and it wasn't too crowded.
The picnic was just a backpack with a bottle of sparkling wine and some Chinese snacks not exactly gourmet or overly filling but still a nice touch. Thankfully, reading the current tour description, it looks like the menu has improved since our trip in November 2017. Lunch afterwards at the restaurant was quite pleasant.
Traffic was not good, so this left us with only a small amount of time at the Great Wall. We returned to our hotel later than expected, which was okay because we didn't have any other plans for the day. My concern is that when we arrived back at the hotel, we were harassed to give tips to both the driver and the tour guide. At no other location in China is tipping expected, so we were thrown off by the way we were treated regarding tips. Yes, the tour was longer than expected, only due to traffic, which was out of our control. However, when you return to your hotel, it is uncomfortable when you are harassed until you give the driver and tour guide the remaining amount of money you have left in your wallet, without stopping until you show them you have no more money left to give. Luckily for us, we only brought with us a small amount. I wouldn't have been able to successfully make the trip to the Great Wall without a private car and the tour guide was helpful, however, I cannot say that I would recommend this tour based on the way we were treated upon our return to our hotel. Also, be prepared because you will need an additional 120rmb per person to use the lift to get up to the Great Wall, this is not already included in the cost.
Great Wall tour was amazing. James the tour guide was very helpful and spoke good English. He was very accommodating throughout the day and made us feel at ease throughout the tour with no pressures. He gave good advice and a had a good knowledge of Beijing. The lunch was very good, albeit a little too much for us. I would recommend this tour as good value for money.
The experience was good but not great.... the idea of having wine and picnic on top of the Great Wall is good but food including lunch in local restaurant was a little disappointed - rather sub-standard
All went very well. The tour guide, Joyce, called on time to schedule pick up from hotel and was on time in the morning. Car was waiting with the driver and we had a nice ride up to Mutianyu. Joyce was excellent and I enjoyed discussing with her China history and the special aspects of the Great Wall. Upon arrival Joyce effectively and quickly arranged everything and we found ourselves on the chairlift with a wonderful view of the mountains and the great wall. On the wall Joyce was very helpful in suggesting the route and encouraging me in the tough climbing spots. She was patient and very helpful. It was a wonderful, and tough experience. A must for everyone. We celebrated the end of the tour with sparkling wine and great snacks. On the way back we had a great Chinese lunch and arrived happy and safely back to the hotel. Ask for Joyce!! She is great. The entire experience was wonderful. Great wall is unbelievable.
This tour is a must do, we did it in style with James who was the best tour guide ever, kept us informed, knew every piece of history, local knowledge, collected amazing snacks for us to eat, it was suppose to be a small group tour and we were the only ones on this tour, so plenty of attention that is for sure. James goes out of his way to make sure the rest of your holiday is well informed, you are safe, he is always on time, speaks great English, makes sure the driver is on time, going where is suppose to. The driver was a great driver as well. James you made our tour to the Great Wall absolutely fantastic and we will never forget you. If we go back to Beijing we want JAMES. Sitting there with our special food and wine gets plenty of envious looks I can tell you.
We only had one day to go to the Great Wall and it turned out it was pouring rain on the day we went. The weather didn't stop us going and despite the weather our tour guide was so positive and also endured the rain to show us around. Champagne followed at lunch. It was the best day!!
An absolutely amazing tour guide, full of energy and enthusiasm. Great way to see the wall and I would definitely recommend the toboggan down from the wall.
This was the highlight of our trip in China.
