Madeira Trike Tours.
Review - October 2020.
Rendezvous 1100 hours Café Sete Mares located on Porto da Madeira for your briefing read our instructions from Madeira Trike Tours.
We arrived early. Decided to have coffee - a double espresso and an Americano. Oh, and two pasteis de nata. With the first bite of the pastry it was as if, in the words of the Bryan Adams track we....”had died and gone to heaven.” They were ‘delicisiosos’.
Having visited Madeira multiple times over the years since the mid 1950s we had never ventured beyond Funchal’s city limits. This tour was intended to remedy that serious oversight.
The crew arrived along with the rest of the passengers. Led by the boss we descended beneath the Sete Mares into a cavernous underground space. Here all manner of tuc-tucs were parked and sheeted up. Although the Island is virtually Covid free, here surely were symbols of the impact of C-19 on the Island’s economy.
Past the ranks of forlorn tuc-tucs we entered the underground HQ of Madeira Trike Tours to be kitted out with helmets and jackets then directed by our driver to our assigned trike. These trikes have a unique machine aesthetic. By no means utilitarian they are works of art combining a Mitsubishi engine with German design and engineering.
The throaty sound of 1400cc engines bursting into life echoed throughout the underground car park. We emerged into brilliant sunshine. When our driver opened the throttle unleashing the power of our machine we were gently pressed back into our seats as our convoy made its way along the Avenida Da Carneiro.
Riding a 175cc Triumph Tigress scooter in the 1960s bore no comparison to the sudden rush of adrenaline from riding in our present sleek, all white motocicleta rodas. We turned off the Avenida and headed inland.
For more than four hours our trike took us effortlessly to some of the highest points on the Island. Through tunnels, into small village communities, above the tree line, into the clouds and back down stopping at inspiring view points to capture the vistas opening before us. Everywhere we went we drew admiring glances. Smart phones pointed in our direction.
The crew gave us a warm welcome. Plenty of banter. Great company. Professional. Knowledgeable. We felt totally safe in their hands and on our machines. Thanks George and especially our driver Steve you made this was one of our best holiday experiences ever.

A Fantastic Experience

It was our first visit to Madeira and wanted to do something different from the usual coach tour and after reading reviews decided to go for the trike tour. Well it was certainly different and an experience we will remember for a long time. There was some doubt if we would reach Madeira as the weather wasn't good en-route but we did. Before we started our tour there were a number of showers but we were provided with waterproofs and a helmet which proved to be invaluable during the tour. We were told that some routes were closed but we still managed to make it up to one viewpoint experiencing hail and strong winds as well as falling branches on the way. The views were spectacular as was a further hailstorm. We then ventured lower down and stopped at another viewpoint before moving onto the Cabo Girao skywalk which is definitely worth a visit. From here we went to Camara de Lobos for a snack, it is a beautiful little port. Our last visiting point was to Cristo Rei which is a smaller version of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro although it was completed 4 years earlier. We then made our way back to where we had started. Special thanks to Steve, our driver, and George for making it a memorable day and we would definitely recommend this.

Wow what can i say. What an amazing trip. George was such a lovely person. He helped my mum who walks with a stick throughout the whole trip. He is very imformative. George took us to some beautiful places. Even though we had rain wind and hail stones it was a fantastic day. Cant wait to do it again. Thank you George. Tracey & Christine.
