Why Travelers Choose This Tour

This experience mixes a guided tour with plenty of free time to explore at your leisure.
Begin your tour in the morning at the Munich Central Train Station, where you’ll meet your guide and board a train for the 2-hour scenic ride to Salzburg. As you ride, enjoy the marvel of the German rail system, renowned for immaculate service and equipment.
You’ll arrive in Salzburg by mid-morning, and your introduction begins with a 1.5-hour walking tour. With your city map in hand, follow your guide for a stroll through this UNESCO-listed city. Admire baroque-era architecture and visit castles, churches, monasteries, gorgeous piazzas and more. Ask questions and snap photos along the way.
After your guided tour, break off from the group for three hours of independent exploring. Plot your trip through the preserved medieval town, wandering along picturesque lanes to see sites like Domkirche Cathedral, the magnificent Festung Hohensalzburg, and Mirabell Garden and Palace, the setting for the classic ‘Do-Re-Mi’ scene from The Sound of Music (admission not included). You’ll have plenty of time to sightsee, souvenir shop and explore local boutiques and eateries.
At the end of your Salzburg  walking tour, head to the train station for the return ride to Munich. You’ll arrive back at the departure point in the evening.

We had a wonderful time on our day trip to Salzburg! Our tour guide Suzanne was wonderful. She was informative, personable and nice. We were a group of about 18 people and it wasn’t too large. She took time to speak to each of us and recommended places to explore during our free time. I’d highly recommended this tour.

Our tour had roughly 30 people, which wouldn’t qualify as a small group by any standard. When the group fills up more than one train car and spills over into another that’s a pretty good indicator it’s a large group. The result was the myriad of issues you’d expect from a larger group. Hard to keep things organized, not everyone can hear the guide providing info, hard to keep the group together, etc. As for the tour itself, it’s a 2 hr train ride to Salzburg, a 90 min “orientation tour” of the city (which means you walk around and some fairly random points of interest are pointed out, but not in any depth) and then roughly 3 hours to see things at your own pace. Might as well have saved the cost of the tour, bought a ticket to Salzburg and Googled the various points of interest. Our particular guide was intent on being on the train at least 30 mins early, which extended a very long tour even longer. The approach made some sense on the way there but not so much on the way back. Just overly rigid. Last thing... next to no Sound of Music stops or info on this tour. Extremely disappointing experience, which is fairly unusual for Viator as we’ve used them several times in the past with really informative guides and had a great time. Recommend skipping this tour in favor of DIY or a different provider.

Our day, travelling to and in Salzburg, April 29th, 2019, with Maxine Ryder was very special and one of the highlights of our trip. Maxine is fun to be with; you feel like friends right from the first interaction. She reads groups very well and builds rapport instantly. Her knowledge, stories and how she weaves it all together is capitvating. During the day we relived Sound of Music and The Great Escape; looking forward to watching both again but with different eyes. An exceptional restaurant, dating from 803 (yes, 803) was ready to receive all that chose to dine there. Highly recommended. Going to Salzburg was a "what should we do on our last day" inspiration and we are so happy to have had Maxine Ryder as our host and guide.

We were fortunate with a beautiful sunny and warm day. Lucia was our guide and she is phenomenal! So much fun to be around. Everything was well organized and we have no complaints whatsoever. Outstanding day!

We were a group of 10 (5 couples) and booked this tour on the basis that it would have been for a small group as advertised and having read on Viator's website that a small group means 8-16 people. The group comprised 32 persons(!). On a positive note, the guide was interesting and helpful.

Paul was such a great tour guide—funny, friendly, and most of all very knowledgeable about the history of Munich and Salzburg! People who love history will enjoy his commentary. He also provides great recommendations for your free time. He is such a hard worker and strives to ensure that everyone enjoys the trip!

This was sold as a small group tour but was actually a 32 people tour which is no way a small group tour.

Sabina our tour guide was great. She knew everything and then some about Salzburg. She would recommend places to buy things and eat. Great tour.

The tour guide Tom was terrific. He provided a insightful talk on the train and a quick overview of he city during a one hour walking tour. He was courteous and had a great sense of humor. He made the experience quite enjoyable. Salzburg deserves a slightly longer visit though. Would recommend staying the night. But if you only have the day this tour is perfect.

Our guide was knowledgeable and gave recommendations. Group was appropriate in size and travel was seamless. Great tour and glad we had adequate free time for lunch and shopping the Christmas Market and other shops in Salzburg. Only recommendation would be to leave earlier from Munich to have more time in Salzburg.
