What To Expect

Your day trip starts with hotel pickup before driving east of Perth to historical York, the first town founded in the Avon Valley. Stop here to enjoy morning tea in town (own expense) before continuing to Hyden, pausing along the way at a dog cemetery in honor of working Australian sheepdogs.

In Hyden, check out Hippo’s Yawn, a rock formation that resembles a yawning hippopotamus, and then sit down to an Aussie Country-Style lunch at the Wildflower Shoppe, and and choose to visit a wildlife park or check out the Antique Lace Collection. After eating, make the drive to Wave Rock, one of Western Australia’s most popular natural landmarks, a 50-foot-tall (15-meter) rock formation that resembles a giant ocean wave.

Next, head to Mulka’s Cave, a large boulder with a hollowed-out, cave-like shape. Then start the drive back to Perth, taking a different route that includes a stop in a country town of for afternoon tea (own expense). If you’re taking this tour during wildflower season (typically September to November), make stops during the day for views and photo opportunities of Western Australia’s renowned wildflowers.

Your day trip ends when you arrive back at your Perth hotel in the late evening.

York Town Hall

Situated in the Avon Valley, York is one of Western Australia’s most picturesque towns with charming architecture. This town was the first inland European settlement in Western Australia, founded back in 1831. Be sure to take a short stroll along the main town strip and see many of the old buildings which are still in use today.

25 minutesAdmission Ticket Included

Wildflower Shoppe

If time permits wander through the wildlife park where you can enjoy time seeing kangaroos, emus, wallabies, wombats, koalas, lizards and a wide range of birds. Alternatively view the antique lace collection, dating back to the 1600’s. These hand and machine made lace products are housed in beautiful hand crafted cabinets.

Fantastic trip. Highly recommend. Wonderful knowledgeable guides made the journey very interesting, filled with facts and stories. Other wonderful sites visited along the way. Be prepared for a long bus trip, (take a book!)but plenty of stops for refreshments and loos. A good bonding journey with fellow Coach travellers. Something to tick off the bucket list.
It's A Long Way

Wave rocks is spectacular but I would have liked a LOT more time to explore Hyden and have some of the tourist shops at the Rock to have been open. Our bus broke down at Yorke which was GREAT as we could explore this beautiful gem of a town with its excellent motor museum. It was a two hour delay and it made the day very long indeed. A rethink of activities and times by the tour company could make this a much more memorable experience.
Day at Wave Rock
Susan_H, Jan 2023
Sadly our coach broke down and had to wait for a replacement, so our time was shortened, everything was then a bit rushed and cut down to size. Particularly the meal. James was very calm, the coach people forgiving so still a pleasant day, but ended up being very long. As yet no apologies from Viator
Excellent bus tour,...

Excellent bus tour, enthusiastic and friendly tour guide, had a nice time overall. Sun protection are very important if you attend this tour in summer time.
Long dog just to travel to wave rock
Tony_R, Jan 2023
A very long day we did see Wave rock though because the driver did not explain to our group the stop at the Hippo yawn was just a stop we walked though very rough track to the Wave rock as we thought it was the stop Maybe a driver who would explain better would have been better for us and we would not have walked 256 mins to the wave instead of seeing The Hippo Yawn and then getting back onto the bus to go to Wave rock not sure what the Aboriginal Cultural was as did not see it or wild flowers
Wave Rock amazing

Wave Rock Misled
Sirena_T, Jan 2023
We enjoyed seeing the country side and harvest time in this part of Australia. The description of the tour was misleading. We understood that wild flowers would not be in bloom during this time of year. The short stops along the way gave us a break from the bus to use the toilets but that is about it. There was definitely NO aboriginal cultural experience. For the Hippos yawn, it was someone's vivid imagination to come up with the name for the rock. Again the stop was so short that people on bus crowded to get photos and get back on the bus. We would recommend a different stop at the end of the tour since the toilets at Stumpy's Roadhouse were filthy and in need of repairs plus the food was not very appealing yet expensive. The actual wave rock was very interesting and longest stop. Bring your own lunch if you chose this tour. We ate at a small diner/cafe prior to the Wave Rock. We got a tasty dish of rice, salad, roll and chicken wing. Initially we thought, OK, we can come get more but they ran our of chicken. So we got what we call "filler" foods. Recommend you bring your lunch.
Dissapointing guide
Wojciech_R, Dec 2022
We visited the Wave Rock and a Cave with aboriginal handprints. We skipped the York Town Hall even though it was listed as one of the attractions (with the entry ticket included in the trip) and we were right next to it. Furthermore, the guide did not provide any in-depth insight into either the formation of the Wave Rock or Aboriginal Culture. It was like "You go, you see, you go back", but without participants really understanding what they see. I learned more from the boards set in the visited locations than from the guide. In the end I spent 13 hours on a bus to see 2 places for for less than an hour in total.

Great trip to Wave Rock
Cameron_D, Nov 2022
Really great day tour and easy way to see some sites located a long way out of Perth. Luke the guide/driver was great and had lots of information and anecdotes to share. The day was well paced, allowing plenty of time to see Wave Rock.
Wave rock amazing... a long trip and a tired lunch stop...
Ruth_H, Nov 2022
The most memorable parts were visiting the rock, hippos yawn and malka's cave. Also great that we saw wild flowers. They were worth the trip! But the value was certainly not in the lunch and passes into wildlife (very sad and tired) and lace place etc. They were runniing out of chicken when we got to line up for food.
York is a very pretty...
DONG_Z, Nov 2022
York is a very pretty town. Our tour guide Chris is marvellous. He is very informative. Wave Rock is certainly worth visit.
Very enjoyable and highly recommended

Very enjoyable day. Tour guide was extremely knowledgeable. The spacious coach was a nice surprise. Seats were spaced apart allowing lots plenty of leg room. Nice lunch provided at Wave Rick cafe
Day Trip to York and Wave Rock
Julie_H, Oct 2022
Great day, though long, which I knew. Easy pick up and then sorting out the different day trips. Good driver and knowledgeable along the way. York was an interesting Wheatbelt town. Though would have liked a quick stop at Hyden Dog Cemetery...don't see many of those along the tracks. Had a good lunch and visit at the wildlife park and Lace Collection, and fabulous walks around Mulka's Cave, Wave Rock and Hippo's Yawn. Highlight of the day was definitely Wave Rock...Magic sight. We were very lucky with perfect weather. Loved it all.
