For your 1-hour tour, make your way to the House of Waterford Crystal in Waterford. Tour hours fluctuate depending on what month of the year it is, so make sure to be aware of the operating hours for the day you want to do your tour. Once you get to the House of Waterford Crystal and are ready to go on your tour, go behind the scenes at the factory. Waterford Crystal is one of the very few companies who still practice the ancient craft of mold making, and as you go through the factory, you’ll see little has changed over the centuries. First up, go into the mold room, and witness blowers shape molten crystal with wooden molds and hand tools. Then, head into the blowing department where you can watch as glowing balls of crystal are put through a 1300-degree furnace. After their time in the furnace, each piece is cut, and sculpted, and engraved to perfection. After the tour, enjoy some time exploring the retail store. From dining tables to golf trophies, this store houses one of the world’s largest collections of Waterford Crystals. If you need a break at any time during the day, there’s also a café you can pop into for a bite to eat or a beverage (own expense).
This tour gave a great overview of the history of Waterford Crystal and an in-depth look at how the crystal is made. You get quite up close to the different stages of manufacture. Some of the one-off pieces were stunning. Some great bargains in the sales room too. Highly recommend this tour to all ages.
One sight to see in Ireland is how crystal is made. Start with a delicious stop at the cafe where dessert portions are large and at a good price. The tour is very informative and takes you literally up close and personal through every step of the crystal making process. Of course handcrafted crystal is pricey and this is seen in the items for sale at the gift shop. Waterford City is beautiful.
Well worth doing. The group tour includes too many guests about 25-30, but the tour is very popular. It gives one a fascinating inside look at the old craft. If you're a craftsman of any type, you will really enjoy watching these guys do their thing. Some really cool machinery as well. We loved all but the crushing crowd.
this was a fantastic experience walking through the factory watching the workers as they blew, cut crystal and designed the pieces. A treasured memory. well worth visit. The tor guide was open to questions.
Fantastic tour. Very knowledgeable tour leader who took the group the group to every step in the Crystal process from A-Z. She stopped above the process station in a large manufacturing plant and explained the process in detail. Crystal is the most intricate process of manufacturing that multiple people do ONE step in the development and then PASS it down the line. Skilled craftsman and women is an understatement with a House of Waterford tour. Don't miss it in any Ireland tour.
Obviously a good tour, crowd kept to a minimum, would've liked a bit more time for pic.s though. Interesting and knowledgable, beautiful pieces along the way, culminating in the gift shop of course!!! Small café inside and two other small tours across the way.
