Mini Gifu paper lantern making in Gifu

This experience tour offers the opportunity to make your own miniature Gifu paper lantern, from creating the framework using higo (bamboo strips), laying the paper over the strips and finally to adding your own design. This activity is sure to give you great satisfaction, as you draw a design of your liking onto the paper lantern after completing the steps to make it—just like a craftworker would! As the largest river port city along the Nagara River, Gifu is home to industries such as Japanese umbrella and paper lantern manufacturing from times of old. These industries use washi (Japanese paper), bamboo and other products that arrived from upstream. The Bon lanterns, Noryo lanterns and many other products that originate from Gifu are widely known as “Gifu-chochin,” or Gifu paper lanterns. Wouldn’t you like to take home a softly-glowing paper lantern made of Japanese paper, made from ever-present traditional techniques?

Washi paper making in the craftworker's place in Mino

This experience tour lets you make Japanese paper (washi) in an atelier that’s actually used by craftworkers. Create your own customized washi by taking advantage of the thin but sturdy quality of Minowashi paper, adding decorations in the spaces and see-through parts in the paper and so on. Washi works well as a book cover, among other things, Minowashi paper is a traditional craftwork product with a 1,300-year history. With an abundance of pure waters, the Makidani region of Mino city once touted an array of 1,000 washi manufacturers as the “homeland of washi”; but only around ten washi manufacturers remain who produce this paper for a living. You’ll get the chance to delve into this deep world of washi, in which it is said that the side of the river bank where one gets the water to make the paper, not to mention the mood of the craftworker both become evident in the paper that they make.

The thread stitching with the geometric patterns for Gifu Wagasa,Paper umbrella

On this experience tour, participants can try the thread stitching techniques used to make the delicate flowers made of string bloom, which are found on the inside of Japanese umbrellas (wagasa). Pass the threads through the holes found in the bamboo ribs of the umbrella for decoration and for reinforcement. You can choose the color of umbrella that you like, and take it home right after you’re finished. Around nine out of 10 of the Japanese umbrellas made in Japan are produced in Gifu. From the Meiji era to the second decade of the Showa era, more than one million wagasa were made, owing to the fact that the Nagara River region is a bountiful source of Japanese paper and of bamboo forests. Although the number of wagasa craftworkers has dwindled and the materials are harder to come by, new craftworkers have come onto the scene to carry on the tradition.
