There's a reason travelers call the Garden Route the "road trip of a lifetime". This scenic coastal pass winds through incredible South African landscapes, quiet towns loaded with culture and history and its well-paved lanes are ripe for adventure. While it’s possible to spend weeks enjoying the dozens of destinations along the Garden Route, three days is enough time to travel its length and take everything that makes this journey a memorable one.
Day 1: Get Wild
The Garden Route is known for its unlimited access to South Africa’s incredibly diverse wildlife. Whether it’s standing on the shores of Mossell Bay watching whales, venturing into the Knysna Elephant Park or exploring the famous ostrich farms of Oudtshoorn, travelers are bound to be close to nature regardless of where they start their journey along the famed Garden Route.
Day 2: Explore Xhosa Culture
Approximately 8 million Xhosa live in South Africa and this Bantu tribe’s clicking language is the second-most spoken tongue in the country. Spend a day venturing into the Transkei, where these marginalized people were forced to relocate during apartheid. Visit the home of Nelson Mandela and learn more about the history, culture and traditions of the Xhosa.
Day 3: Get Your Blood Pumping
No Garden Route journey is complete without at least a little taste of adventure. Spend a day in the famed town of Wilderness participating in one of the adrenaline pumping activities this place is known for. Whether it’s horseback riding through waterfalls, paragliding above families of dolphins or snorkeling in a nearby lagoon, Wilderness is the perfect place to get out of the car and back into nature.
