How to Spend 1 Day in Grand Turk
It’s easy to explore the highlights of compact Grand Turk Island in just one day. From colonial buildings and historic landmarks to spectacular beaches and a range of water activities, here are a number of sights that will help you make the most of 24 hours in the capital of the Turks and Caicos.
Morning: Explore the Island
Start your day by exploring the historic attractions of Grand Turk, such as the Grand Turk Lighthouse, Her Majesty’s Prison, and the Turks and Caicos National Museum. Guided tours by tram, truck, ATV, and dune buggy are available, and you can also explore on your own with a rental car, scooter, golf cart, or bicycle. Be sure to stroll along Front, Duke, or Queen streets in Cockburn Town to see colorful colonial houses. Wrap up your morning at one of the many scenic beaches on the island, such as Governor’s Beach or Pillory Beach, which are also great places to grab lunch.
Afternoon: Swim, Snorkel, and Scuba
No trip to the Caribbean would be complete without spending some time in the water. Head to Gibbs Cay, one of Grand Turk’s top attractions, to swim, snorkel, and interact with gentle southern stingrays. Some tours include several stops for snorkeling or diving for conch. Scuba divers will enjoy the pristine waters around the island at places such as the West Caicos Walls or Salt Cay. From January to April, you can also opt to go on a whale watching tour.
Night: Sunset and Drinks
After a full day of exploring Grand Turk by land and by sea, unwind and enjoy the sunset over dinner and drinks near the beach. If a cruise ship is in town, head to the port and the largest Margaritaville in the Caribbean. For a more romantic option, charter a boat for an intimate sunset cruise. One you’re back on Grand Turk, wrap up your evening with a nightcap and some live ripsaw, the national music of the Turks and Caicos.
