New Territories Tours

star-1
1 Review
New Territories
The largest of the three main areas of Hong Kong, the New Territories stretches from north of Kowloon to the Chinese border and also includes the outlying islands of Hong Kong. New Territories offers both the urban sprawl typical of the city, as well as the natural beauty of mountains, beaches, and unspoiled countryside.

The Basics
There are numerous ways to experience the New Territories. Following a heritage trail is a great way to explore Hong Kong’s rural culture and history as you pass by traditional walled villages, ancestral halls, old shrines, and temples. Active visitors can enjoy biking, hiking, and kayaking tours. Nature lovers appreciate Hong Kong Geopark, or other country parks. Foodies might take a traditional food tour, street food tour, or enjoy a seafood feast on an outlying island.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • There are multiple ways to experience the New Territories, including adventure, food, and culture tours.
  • The New Territories covers a lot of ground: Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to do some walking.
  • Remember to bring water, sunscreen, and a hat.
  • It’s a good idea to carry an umbrella, as Hong Kong weather can be unpredictable.

How to Get There
The New Territories can be accessed by public transportation. Several MTR lines, as well as buses and minibuses, all service the region. There are also regular ferry services to the outlying islands. Taxis are another option, and both red (urban) and green (New Territories) taxis serve the New Territories. Most tours include round-trip transportation for ease.

When to Get There
The weather tends to be the most pleasant between October and February, making it a great time to visit. Expect high humidity and temperatures over 80°F (27°C) from May to September.

Outlying Islands
There are more than 200 outlying islands in Hong Kong, though most are uninhabited. The most popular and accessible islands include Lantau (home of the cable car, Po Lin Monastery, Big Buddha, and Hong Kong Disneyland), Lamma (known for its seafood restaurants, hiking trails, and beaches), and Cheung Chau (known for fishing, remote beaches, and temples).
