Unfortunately over half of the museum was closed and we only had about an hour tour. Our guide showed us some of the works of art on his phone that were not on display, however it would have been better to see the actual works of art.
Great guide. Wish he had given us more information on the lives of Rembrandt and Vermeer instead of just talking about their works of art.
My 3 hour private VIP guided tour of the Rijksmuseum was the absolute highlight of my time in Europe. Kees, the guide, is an art historian who is a fount of knowledge about the Dutch Golden Age, of course, but also about particular paintings, the way they came to be, lives of the painters and their families and modern research. He made the time vivid and alive. Cant recommend highly enough!
We had a wonderful private tour of the Van Gogh museum from Drs Kees Kaldenbach - he has written a book about Van Gogh and offers insightful observations throughout along with putting Van Goghs life and experiences in context. The weave of knowledge and speculation allow even light-art folk like ourselves to engage with the material and gain a deep understanding in an effortless 2 hour stroll.
We moved directly to the front of the line and were first into the museum and had unfettered access as we strolled almost alone discussing the works. Kees is delightful and customizes his approach to the audience, at once answering the most banal and basic and the more ambiguous and complex with the same interest and concern. His upper end of knowledge was certainly untested by us, however his depth and breadth of knowledge and his friendly demeanor made us feel like experts by the end of the tour! My highest recommendation!
This was a highlight of our trip. We got to see all of the best paintings before the crowds poured and then had time to go back at our leisure and do the studio tour. A great museum and a great tour.
What an amazing way to see this art collection! Through the eye of a true art historian and expert, exclusive access and knowledge, this was just fabulous!!
The tour guide was well informed, articulate, organized, interesting, and fun. Highly recommend.
The tour with Kees was amazing, we have been the first in the museum and we had some 20-25 minutes to be nearly alone in the hall of fame - if nothing else, this was to money worth. But it was just an add-on. To spend 3 hours in the Rijksmuseum with Kees was something extraordinary. He showed us all the important Dutch masters, spent time explaining the most important paintings, on the other hand he also showed us other interesting items from the collection of Rijksmuseum, telling us the stories you would not find in any guides...
If I would go once more to Rijksmuseum, I would definitely go with Kees again.
We have been in the museum with this tour guide Kees and I would highly recommend to spend the time in the museum with him. His explanations were really interesting and he showed us other point of views on the work and life of Vincent Van Gogh. It was a great time with him...
And if you are already in Amsterdam dont forget to go with Kees to Rijksmuseum - that was brilliant too
We had a wonderful tour. Our Guide was very informative. This is the only way to see the treasures in the gallery. He was very accommodating and able to answer all our questions. He even brought materials that enhanced our experience. Thank you.
Kees provided our group of 4 with an in depth look at the masterpieces of the Mauritshuis, followed by highlights of the Mondrian exhibit at the Gemeentemuseum. If you think you know the 'Girl with the Pearl Earring' he will explain why it's not a pearl. He is an art scholar with extensive background and experience which he willingly shared with our group of amateurs. He met us in Amsterdam and led us thru the maze of the Dutch train stations to The Hague with comments as we traveled. He was very adaptable to our interests and I highly recommend him, especially for anyone with a special interest in Dutch art of the Golden Age.
IMO, this is the ONLY way to see the Van Gogh museum. Kees the guide speaks perfect English and his expertise is both engaging and comprehensive. I learned so much more than I expected and it was fascinating. He combines all aspect of Van Gogh's craft -- his personal history, his family, his artistic influences, the development of his skill as an artist, the time in which he lived, etc. I HIGHLY recommend this tour. It costs more than the group tours, but there is absolutely no comparison!
