The museum tells the sad story of an artist ahead of his time. He was a colorist before color was popular and sold only one paining during his life. But, he produced a huge collection of beautiful art that his relatives saved for prosperity.
My ticket was combined with a canal boat ride. I purchased it that way because gallery only tickets were not available. The problem was that the boat was only valid on a specific boat company at a specific location. Other than an address, there was no information on how to find it. After a few long walks to wrong places following the advice of our hotel people (language barrier). I found it by googling the address. It was ultimately easily accessible by tram. I suggest buying your tram ticket separately if you can because there are boats all over town.
We decided on this deal to save time and money once we got to Amsterdam! It worked out really well and we loved the museum! You are able to board at any Lovers Canal dock which was also very nice and convenient! Before going I didn't realize that the cruise would be partially covered which would be nice on a rainy day but made us feel like we were far away from the water! The tour is done by ear buds which is fine but a little impersonal! Altogether is was a good deal though!
So the walk from where we were staying near the red light district to the muesem was long but interesting along the way the van Gogh museum was grest my daughter is at Leeds art uni so was lovely for her to see .
The Van Gogh Museum and independent tour via headset was powerful and informative!
Try to book the earliest time to enter the museum to avoid summer crowds. The museum is beautiful and the exhibits are wonderful.
We started with the van gogh museum at 9am when it opened. Small line to get in, got head phones and started the tour. It was great!! We learned so much about the man and his family and friends, unbelievable insight into Van Goghs life. Afterwords called the cruise company for a place to get on-board, went over one canal by the museum and found the boat easily another great tour/well run
