Overview

Watch for elephant, leopard, crocodile, and other native wildlife on a 3-hour private safari drive in Minneriya National Park. Traveling by private 4x4, explore the forests, marshlands, scrub, and reservoir lake for everything from elephants to Sri Lankan leopard, sloth bear, deer, monkeys, aquatic birds, and other creatures. Choose an early morning or afternoon departure, and enjoy return transfers if your hotel lies within 3 miles (5 kilometers) of the gate.
  • Private 4x4 safari in Minneriya National Park
  • Choose an early morning or afternoon safari
  • Park entrance fees at own expense
  • Price per vehicle, including pickup and drop-off at hotels within 3 miles (5 kilometers) of park entrance
Book a morning or afternoon safari and travel independently to Minneriya National Park. Alternatively, if your hotel lies within a 3-mile (5-kilometer) radius of the entrance, enjoy a pickup and transfer to the gates.

Head inside (own expense), meet your driver-guide, and board your private 4x4 — complete with rollaway top for open-top viewing in good conditions — and begin your safari. Composed of forest, marshlands, scrubland, and a vast reservoir lake, Minneriya’s diversity makes it a haven for many species, from elephants to birdlife.

Follow the tracks, watching for everything from the elusive Sri Lankan leopard and sloth bear to elephants, monkeys, water monitors, deer, and saltwater crocodiles, and at the reservoir, look for birds like the painted stork, pelicans, and cormorants.

In the early morning, you may see deer by the water while late afternoons may bring sightings of elephants enjoying their daily bath and birds returning to their nests. If you’re here from August to October, you might also see the ‘Elephant Gathering,’ when up to 150 elephants congregate in what seems to be an annual ritual.

Your safari ends at the park gate, or if you’re staying within 3 miles (5 kilometers), with a hotel drop-off.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Minneriya National Park
Your Minneriya National Park safari will start at 5:30 am if you choose the Morning Safari options, or at 2:30 pm if you choose the Evening Safari option. If your hotel is within a 5km radius to the entrance gate, you will also receive a complimentary pickup from your hotel. If not, you will meet your guide at the entrance guide during your selected departure time. The park has many land types and growth. Wetlands mix in with agricultural land and rocky outcrops, and forests walk hand in hand with scrublands. This also means that the types of wildlife and birds that live in the park or visit it are quite varied. You may get to see a crocodile or even an extremely rare grey slender loris if you’re lucky. A little herd of deer may visit the Minneriya reservoir as you watch early in the morning. If you plan your safari to the months of August, September or October you might get a chance to see the elephant congregation named the ‘Elephant Gathering’ with its collective number of over 150 elephants in one place. It’s said that the elephants arrive from all surrounding areas for this gathering annually. If you opt for the evening safari, which is the best time to see this park, you can also see the elephants taking their daily bath and watch the many different kinds of birds heading off to their nests at the end of the day. After you complete your half-day watching nature in action, you will return back to the hotel. If you select the morning tour option you will finish your tour at 8:30am. If you select the evening tour option you will finish the tour at 5:30 pm. If your hotel is within a 5km radius of the entrance gate you will receive a complimentary drop-off right to your hotel as well. Please Advise which safari would you like to go on when you making the booking.
