Overview

Want to experience village life in Crete? Spend a day away from the island beaches and discover the charms of the Greek island hamlets instead. The day trip includes visits to the historical Agia Triada monastery with its vineyards and olive groves, plus a stop at Koules Fortress to see the Souda Gulf. Explore the charming village of Maheria, visit a ceramic studio, and finish with lunch at a family-run tavern in the mountain foothills.
  • Tour through Crete’s villages and countryside
  • Take a tour of the Agia Triada monastery and its cellar, learn its history, and enjoy olive oil tasting
  • Stop at Koules Fortress and soak up views of the Souda Gulf
  • Visit the picturesque village of Maheri, an unspoiled hamlet with only 100 inhabitants
  • Step inside a ceramics studio and meet the ceramist
  • Eat a hearty lunch featuring local ingredients at a tavern
  • Includes hotel pickup and drop-off in Chania
Daily life in a village is intriguing for outsiders. It’s laid-back, authentic and inevitably traditional. During your day trip, you’ll get a taste for the slow-paced village life on a Greek island. It’s a snapshot of the culture that many don’t get to see.

After a pickup from your Chania hotel, travel to Agia Triada, a 17th-century monastery with three distinctive domes. Translated as Holy Trinity, the monastery is a serene spot to while away some time. Explore its cellars, the groves of olives around the grounds, and chat to the wine and olive oil makers in the monastery vineyards. You will enjoy delicious olive oil tasting at the monastery.

Your next point of call is Koules Fortress, a Venetian structure in Apokoronas province. Once known as Rocco al Mare, the 16th-century fortress is an imposing sight that guards the Venetian harbor. Have your camera on hand as the views sweep dramatically over the Souda Gulf.

From the fortress, continue to Maheria, a tiny village with a population of around 100. Wander amid the alleyways and try to seek out the chapel, which is carved into a cliff. Stop at a typical kafenion (bar), and sample some refreshments. Then, travel inland to visit a local ceramics studio.

Travel onward through the foothills of the White Mountains, stopping for a rustic lunch with fresh local specialties at a family-run tavern. The idyllic spot overlooks the valley and sea, and allows you to soak up the views as you eat. Finally, relax on your journey back to Chania, and finish with a hotel drop-off.

Wonderful small group 3 tour by local resident and experienced tour leader whose approach was to build on her knowledge to personalise the tour to our interests. This enabled us to participate in a variety of activities - lunch in a mountain top restaurant, a visit to ceramist's studio, a visit to a medieval monastery to learn about its emblematic history and learn about its olive oil and wine making enterprises - whilst providing us with time to enjoy one another's company and the glorious environment.

Loved this tour. It was small but the guide made sure we were comfortable and was very knowledgeable about the history of Crete. The trip took us throughout the beautiful countryside and was one of the major highlights of our trip.
