Private, 7-hour Jewish history tour of Girona and Besalú
Explore two of Catalonia's most important Jewish heritage sites
Walk among medieval streets largely unchanged by time
Visit the Museum of Jewish History in Girona
Enter a 12th-century underground Mikveh in Besalú
Price is per group; tours can accommodate up to 7 people
Begin the day with hotel pickup, available from Girona, in a private vehicle. First, explore Girona’s old Jewish quarter, also known as the ‘Call’ and considered one of the best preserved of it’s kind in Europe, remaining much as it was up until the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. Soak up the atmosphere as you wander winding medieval streets, poke around in unique shops, and take a break for lunch at a local restaurant (own expense). Also visit the town’s Museum of Jewish History (admission included) to learn about the area’s past and notable former residents, including prominent kabbalist and Jewish scholar Nahmanides. In the afternoon, continue on to the town of Besalú, crossing the Fluvià River by way of a distinctive Romanesque bridge. Hear about Besalú’s long Jewish heritage, traces of which are still being uncovered today, and learn why the town was named a site of great cultural and artistic importance in 1966. See the remnants of a 13th-century synagogue and visit the town’s most esteemed cultural treasure — an underground Mikveh (ceremonial bath) that dates back to the 12th century. Imagine what life was like during medieval times with a stroll through the picturesque narrow streets marked by stone steps and archways, and browse handcrafted goods at small local shops. The full-day discovery tour concludes with drop-off back at your original departure point in the afternoon.

Fantastic Tour with Awesome Guide & Driver!
, Jun 2019
Our private tour with Carmen and Marc was fantastic! We saw so much and Marc even adjusted our tour when he heard we were Game of Thrones fans. We loved learning the Jewish History and the places we toured were amazing! What a fantastic day we had and our pictures are treasures! We made memories to last a lifetime! Very comfortable and safe ride with Carmen and Marc is very knowledgeable, friendly, kind, and professional. He made sure we enjoyed every minute of our tour. Our family loved the lunch of Tapas Marc suggested. It was great to see the clips of Game of Thrones on his iPad and then go to that exact location on our tour. We are so grateful we chose this tour and would highly recommend any tour with Carmen and Marc.
We cannot say enough about the phenomenal tour guides who showed us a perfectly wonderful day in Girona and Besalu. Marc and Carmen are extremely capable, knowledgeable, and accommodating. Don't consider seeing these beautiful medieval cities with any other guides than Marc & Carmen/Viator! You will be very happy & well cared for. Gorgeous cities!
Marc was an outstanding tour guide and was very knowledgeable about the history and was able,to make sure we saw all of the important Jewish sites as well as other sites in Girona as well as Besalú. We were picked up in Barcelona by Carmen and Marc and the drive to Girona was also very informative. Marc gave us an excellent suggestion for lunch and Carmen was able,to make the reservation for us. We would highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in the Jewish history from this area.
Wonderful experience only wish we hadn't stopped for lunch. The tour was enlightening with a passionate guide and good driver. Since the tour was from Barcelona and the ship docked later than we expected the guide was very flexible about switching our timewe needed a bit more time and had to skip the museum in Girona to see the beautiful and wonderful Bresalu. We were treated to a private look into an ancient Mikva there. Overall I would recommend the tour to anyone interested in Jewish history.
Marc and Carmen were incredibly knowledgeable about Girona and Besalu, as well as accommodating and friendly. I chose pickup from the Girona train station, and transportation was a comfortable new air conditioned van. The mikveh at Besalu is not to be missed.
Ramon and Carmen were excellent educational content hosts. They were very hospitable as well. However, the climbing in Girona was too difficult for my husband to do. The Jewish Museum was very interesting. In retrospect, I would not have had them pick us up at the hotel as the amount of time and money for that equaled half the cost of the trip. We enjoyed the easier pace of Besalu.
