Tea ceremony and kimono-wearing experience in Osaka
A hands-on cultural experience ideal for first-time visitors
Learn about local culture from a tea master and witness a tea ceremony
This experience was very nice, dressing up was good fun and the tea ceremony was lovely to witness. I would recommend this for anyone wanting to get an insight into the tea ceremony culture. The ceremony was quite short, not sure if it is worth the cost.
The studio is small and modest. I recommend you take a taxi there because I think it would be a little hard to find on your own. ( I took the train back to my hotel) A sweet lady helped me put on all the pieces that go under the kimono and then I chose a beautiful pink kimono from a selection of about 12 different colors and patterns. She fixed my hair in a simple updo and I picked what decoration I would like in my hair. Next, I met the lady who would be guiding me through the Tea Ceremony. She was excellent, patient and very knowledgable She talked about the history and beautiful custom surrounding the tea ceremony first. Then, she demonstrated how to purify the tools and perform the ceremony. We each had our own set of all the tools needed to perform the ceremony and she led me slowly through each step. It was lovely and tranquil. We had the traditional sweet ( yum) before the drinking tea we prepared. I enjoyed the whole experience very much and highly reocommend Meg-san as my teacher. You can take many pictures if you like and she let me keep my tabi socks as a souvenier!
To sum up my experience, it was a very short experience that lasted about an hour or so (including dressing up, the tea ceremony process and taking of photos). The lady who guided us through was very thorough and pleasant to be with. She was very nice and kind. I just wished the experience was longer.
I would highly recommend this tea ceremony experience. Maiyumi was an excellent tea master! She was very knowledgeable and experienced and carried out the rituals of the tea ceremony with practised grace and ease. I loved choosing my kimono. It was absolutely stunning and I felt very privileged to have the chance to wear one. The decoration in the tea room is beautiful, too. The staff here are gracious and welcoming. I have already recommended this to several friends planning trips to Japan.
