Fabulous Sicilian lunch in Authentic Palermo Apartment with market visit
Jenny M
, Sep 2019
Our group of 6 (3 couples -NZers and UK) attended this wonderful Sicilian cooking class and market visit. We were met by Fabrizio (tour leader), Marco (chef), and Julia (translator) at 10am at the Capo market. The team are knowledgeable, friendly, and instantly made us feel part of the true Sicilian cooking experience! We wandered the market for about 40 minutes - Marco knew the right stalls to show us and explain what to look for when choosing the ingredients. Julia was very patient with all of our questions and translated everything Marco told us so that we could become true market shoppers! Once finished, we followed Marco and Julia back to Marco's gorgeous little apartment - about a 10-15 minute walk. Once there, Marco has a room off his kitchen, where he has a central table and he prepares all of the dishes. Marco will show you how to prepare something and then it's your turn at the table to copy! As an example for this review, our menu consisted of these authentic Sicilian dishes: 1. White wine infused with fresh peaches and home-grown mint. This chilled in the fridge for the first hour and then was shared around to drink whilst we continued with the other dishes. 2. Bread rolls opened out and layered with tomatoes, cheese, oil, oregano, pepper, ricotta, and then baked in the oven - a real Sicilian street food classic! 3. Super fresh market sardines stuffed with the most AMAZING breadcrumb mixture - with chillis, oil, paprika, garlic, salt/pepper, raisins, parsley. They are then baked in the oven with bay leaves. 4. The remaining sardines were simply panfried in oil and served with a squeeze of lemons (from Marco's farm garden). The best way to have them! 4. Linguine with a fresh tomato sauce, garlic, and green leaves from the zucchini plant. We spent 2 hours preparing the dishes and had a fun time chatting, watching, and making all of the food. Marco was always watching what we were doing and teaching us the best ways to achieve the best results! We alternated between the prep room and Marco's kitchen. The kitchen is quite small so I'd have to say that our group of 6 is perhaps the maximum. Once cooked, we all moved to Marco's dining area and enjoyed a fun hour eating and chatting. They provided a couple of bottles of white wine which helped make it a great lunch. I would recommend this cooking class! Perhaps a limoncello at the end would be nice, and maybe an option to buy an additional bottle of wine or 2? Great class.

Marco the chef is very charismatic and funny. He gave us great tips in the market and in the kitchen. We had a great translator, Julia who gave us insight not just about cooking but also about life in Palermo. By the time we sat down for lunch, it was more like eating and hanging out with friends. What a fun day! I will take any of Fabrizio Cavallaro’s tours.

Palermo Walking Tour and Street Food | Dec 2019
Our tour guide, Fabrizio, was friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. There were 4 of us on the tour, the perfect number to receive his personal attention. We tasted the foods that he had planned for us on the tour, and then each time I had a question about what we were seeing or walking past, he patiently explained and we stopped, he purchased the item, and then we tasted the additional items!

This was an excellent way to see the markets and sample the food that Palermo had to offer. The guide was one the most excellent person to lead this. We took our time and sampled many of the food offerings in the market. Well worth the cost/time.

Markets and Monuments: Walking Tour in the Center of Palermo | Sep 2019
Despite a rainy day in Palermo, we had a truly awesome tour and would never have experienced the city this way had we just went out on our own. Fabrizio was a great tour guide and very knowledgeable in all things historical. This is a tour packed with information and we learned a ton about the history, foods and culture in Palermo. I would highly recommend this specific walking tour!

Palermo Walking Tour and Street Food | Aug 2019
We had 9 family members traveling. Our tour guide was prompt, he engaged the kids during the tour and was very knowledgeable of the history in Palermo. I know that you might feel like you could do this on your own,but we were able to follow his lead, listen to great stories, try delicious food, and laugh with one another while we walked through the city without stumbling through a map! Great job. We would do this again.

Just wow

Sailing Tour from Catania | May 2019
We were delighted to find our party of four were the only booking which made the trip extra special. Informative relaxed sail, Bruno was more than happy to show us the ropes or enjoy the wonderful scenery. He talks on each feature along the way to give interest and insight. Our stop with his amazing on board chef skills was also delicious and he fed us in true Italian style. So much we all nearly snoozed and rested for the gentle sail back to port. Would highly recommend. Thank you truly.

We had a wonderful day out sailing, the captain & crew were welcoming and friendly. The lunch was amazing, some crackers & cheese, 2 types of fish, pasta, fresh vegetables and fruit. They were even some great espresso shots offered. Our family group were 73-27 and everyone enjoyed the day.

The only reason this tour didn't...

Palermo Walking Tour and Street Food | Jul 2018

The only reason this tour didn't receive 5 stars is because the style of our guide left us wondering if she loved her city or if this was a job. We love to 'experience' a place walking and tasting and she delivered on this in a big way. The local market was certainly a highlight and the breakfast pizza was the perfect way to get started.

Private Tour!

Palermo Walking Tour and Street Food | Jun 2018
We were fortunate to be the only ones on the street food tour for the day so Manuela was able to give us a private tour of Palermo. She was very knowledgeable of the history of the area, the buildings, and the street food. A great tour for the first day In Palermo. I would recommend her and the tour to anyone.

This was NOT what we expected. We...

Palermo Walking Tour and Street Food | May 2018

This was NOT what we expected. We did the Sunday morning tour and our guide, Valentina, was very good. As a cultural tour it was excellent but forget the street food thing and you will definitely need to have breakfast before you go. Although we were taken through the wonderful markets all we got to have was a very small sampling of panelli, a tiny square of pizza, one very good arancino and some flat bread - that was it apart from a very small cannolo at the end of our tour. No opportunity offered for the glass of wine, beer or water and our guide was non-plussed when we asked what happened to that option. The coffee stop was definitely not included either. This tour was not value for money and don't go there expecting a great food experience.
