Begin with pickup from your city or beach hotel in Penang, and take in views of the countryside on the 2-hour drive to Gua Tempurung. Meet a nature guide for a briefing on cave travel, then enter Gua Tempurung for a 2-hour guided tour.
Follow walkways through large chambers hung with stalactites, passing bristling stalagmites on the cave floor. Find rock formations illuminated by electric lighting, and listen for the fluttering sounds of the bats that nest in the cave system. Slip through narrow entrances, then watch the cave walls open up into soaring, water-carved domes—Tempurung means ‘coconut,’ and the cave is named for the coconut-shaped domes that cap several of the cave chambers.
Return to the surface for lunch at a nearby restaurant before making the return trip to Penang. If time permits, pause to snap photos of the sultan’s palaces at Kuala Kangsar. This tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel.
