On arrival at the protected coastal sanctuary, hop aboard a boat for a river cruise through red and white mangroves teeming with crustaceans, reptiles, virgin flora and multiple species of birds.

As you tour the marine park, including San Lorenzo Bay, your guide points out mogotes — rocky island hills dripping with dense subtropical forest. See Cayo de los Pájaros (Bird Key), inhabited by brown pelicans and frigate birds. Among the flora, spot the tropical almond; the wild banyan tree, also known as the shortleaf fig; and the cupey, a dominant tree species with horizontal branches full of birds.

You’ll enjoy lunch and an opportunity to swim under refreshing waterfalls. Then continue your excursion with a visit to some of the Los Haitises caverns, whose walls are adorned with prehistoric pictographs and petroglyphs created by the region’s first inhabitants.

At the end of your eco-tour, you’re transferred back to your starting point, with drop-off at your hotel.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Los Haitises National Park
Head deep into Los Haitises National Park, where dozens of rocky island hills called mogotes drip with dense subtropical forest. When you reach Los Haitises, take a ride down the river and see the magnificent mangroves, rich with a variety of species such as red mangrove and white mangrove, and crawling with sea creatures. As you tour the marine park, your guide will point out Los Haitises islands such as Cayo de los Pájaros (Bird Key), which frigate birds and brown pelicans inhabit. Spot the cupey, a dominant tree species with horizontal branches full of birds, the wild banyan tree (also known as the shortleaf fig) and the tropical almond, among other flora such as delicate orchids. Continue your ecological adventure with a visit to the caverns, which the area’s first inhabitants (who possibly predated the indigenous Tainos) decorated with pictographs and petroglyphs. Enjoy a refreshing dip under the delightful waterfalls and dine on lunch before completing your eco-tour.

Fantastic day! The bus ride took us through a lot of countryside so we could see the real people rather than tourists! The boat ride was terrific with lots to see. They broke out the rum very early but none of our group over indulged! Staff were very attentive. Save your money - the videos and pictures are not worth it - poor quality and mostly canned. Walking to the caves may have been difficult for some - a couple of people declined to see the second cave. The caves were fascinating. Lunch on an island was very nice - specially the fresh caught and boiled shrimp. Be aware, this is a wet landing! The tour was as described except that we did not see the Yanigua Waterfall.

This trip was far too long, 15+ hours, 7 of which we didn't have an English speaking guide. The ones that did speak English had a basic knowledge of the various sights, which was more like a script and couldn't elaborate any further. Far too long in the coach between sights, 2 hours from one stop to where we had lunch which we ate at 3pm! Left there at 4pm to go back to our hotel and arrived at 9.30pm. Not a pleasant day.

This trip included stopping along the way at a place where it was possible to tour a farm home and a nearby school in addition to the time spent in the national park, which is an outstanding attraction on its own. Also went swimming below a waterfall at a place where we had our meal. A good trip to experience the Dominican country side

Long bus ride from Punta Cana. The boat ride and park tour was nice. Waste of money and time. I would not do this trip again.

Guide was wonderfully knowledgeable about the area and culture. Make sure to wear a hat--lots of sun on the water!
