Great trip up Cotopaxi!

Daniel, Byron & Carmen were fantastic guides. The conditions up Cotopaxi were challenging but doable (dress for a wet, chilly trek if conditions are bad; extra socks would be a good idea). The food at the lodge was wonderful and plentiful. Daniel and Carmen are cheerful, full of great information and amazing at keeping your spirits up!

Guide Jackie was energetic and full of information. The meals were good and the atmosphere lovely. The hike is a bit challenging, but you can always make it if you go slow enough.

We were in Quito for a few days and decided to take this tour. It was well worth it! The day started in Plaza Foch where we were picked up at around 7:30AM. Our Tour Guide was Mauro and he was excellent. Very easy going, knowledgable, and funny! After picking up a few other guests across Quito, we made our way to a lodge for breakfast (9:00AM at this point). The drive to the lodge was pretty and breakfast was delicious (fruit, toast with jam, eggs, and good coffee). The grounds were beautiful, too. We even got to take photos with some llamas! After breakfast, we made our way to the base of the volcano. Along the way, we picked up a woman named Carmen (local of the area) and stopped at a rest area where we purchased snacks and tea to help with the altitude. Make sure to bring or purchase snacks; you will need the energy for the hike and lunch isn't until the late afternoon. We also stopped at a vista point where we got a beautiful view of the volcano. It was noon by the time we got to the base of the volcano and began the actual hike. The hike took less than an hour and wasn't that difficult, but we both work out at least a couple times a week so I'm sure that helped. They also let you take as much time as you need, so we took our time. Just be mindful that it can get cold/windy, so pack extra layers of clothing with you. Also, we didn't experience the 'thin air' that past reviews described, but again, we took our time, ate plenty of food in the morning, and drank that special tea. At the top, you get to hang out in a cozy, little cabin where you can get hot chocolate, use the bathroom, etc. It was fun hanging out with the other hikers. After about 20 minutes, we made our way down the volcano. Going down is pretty easy since the loose soil softens your steps. It was 1:45PM by the time we all reached the van, cleaned our shoes, and were ready to head out. After the hike, we stopped at a lagoon (it was now 2:15PM) and got more great views of the volcano. There were also wild horses in the area which was beautiful to see! After spending some time at the lagoon, we stopped at the same rest area to use the bathroom, before heading towards the lodge again for lunch. By the time we sat down to eat, it was around 3:45PM (lentil soup, beef, potatoes, salad, and fruit). It was a good lunch! We headed back to the city at 4:45PM and arrived to Plaza Foch at 5:30PM. We were tired at this point, but had an awesome time on this tour!

Altitude Test

, Oct 2019
I used this excursion to test my body's ability to adjust to the altitude for another part of my trip. I had some coca tea and chewed the leaves, as it is supposed to help with the altitude. You can feel the difference in the air (thin), so I would recommended that you be prepared for it. We picked-up another guide, Paolina, (of Inca descent?) who lead the group to the refuge. She was an absolute wealth of information about Cotopaxi and the surrounding area. It was a fun outing even tho' I opted to stop part way up the mountain since I had less than a day to acclimate to the altitude. We stopped for lunch at the same lodge where we had breakfast at about 4:45PM, so do be prepared for a late one (bring snacks). The food for breakfast and lunch were quite good.

Worth every penny!

This was worth every penny! The 2 meals included were delicious, although breakfast seemed small considering you are hiking Cotopaxi. The guides were all so friendly, knowledgable and really made the day fun. When I arrived, I didn't think I could make the hike because of the altitude sickness but the cocoa leaves you can chew on really help and there was adequate time to go slow. It was so satisfying to get to the refuge at the top. The hot chocolate at the top is worth the hike alone. The stamp and the photos are just bonuses. I had a really clear day (thank you Pachimama) so I could see the top of the Volcano from the refuge. It was a really incredible experience.

Awesome hike up the volcano

Great trip to Cotopaxi volcano. Our guide Daniel was awesome. Our local guide Carmen was amazing. Learned so much about this region from them both. Our driver Christian got us there and back safely. The hike is strenuous. You climb 300 meters in about 1 kilometres and end at 4864 meters above sea level. The climb plus altitude is demanding. Great cafe at the top. The views are worth the effort.

Great trip to volcano Cotopaxi incl. 40-45 min. hike to José Ribas mountain refuge on 4868 m. Breathing on that height not easy but the amazing views are well worth the effort. Thank you very much for your great company and information during the trip, David and Paulina. And specials thanks to David also for the great and entertaining dance performance!

Trip was excellent start to finish. Tour guide Daniel from Best Trip Ecuador kept us entertained throughout with funny but yet insightful information. Both breakfast and lunch were excellent but most of all, it turned out to be a beautiful day offering clear views of the fantastic Volcano Cotopaxi. Very happy with the whole experience.
