This popular full-day tour highlights one of Ecuador's natural wonders, as well as a typical market that sells handicrafts and items made by local artisans. The cultural adventure begins with a visit to Saquisilli (Thursdays) or Pujilli (sunday) for a look at local markets. These towns are rich with culture and history, and are home to indigenous people who still create clothes and other items in traditional ways. Travelers get to experience authentic Ecuador on this part of the tour, before embarking on a scenic drive to Laguna Quilotoa.

Enjoy stunning views of the emerald lagoon that's tucked inside the volcanic crater in the Andean mountains on a two-hour walk around the crater rim. Travelers can opt to walk back from the lake or ride a mule if they're tired.

It was an amazing experience. We were picked up at our hotel, no wandering the streets hoping to connect with a total stranger. Our guide spoke perfect English. Drove us everywhere we went. Our major event was the trip to the Lagoon. The walk down is a little steep, but no problem. I selected the horse/mule ride up, in part because I love horses, but also, at that altitude, I didn't think I would make it up comfortably. There was a guide from the area in charge of the animals. It was a difficult assent even for them. The views were amazing. I think my son enjoyed that part the most. We also went up to the highlands. It was green and rolling hills really mountains. The fascinating part was visiting a yurt like dwelling where a farmer and his wife and children lived. They farm their land as the Indians did hundreds of years ago. He proudly showed us a little basket fillws with the types of crops he grew--small ears of corn and strangely shaped potatoes among them. Evidently there are over 200 varieties of potato in Ecuador. There were also Guinea Pigs mom dad and a bunch of babies running around the inside of the yurt. Throughout the entire day, our guide was knowledgeable and charming. His expertise made the trip so much better than our attempting it on our own. We had a wonderful meal in a small restaurant on the top of the mountain. It tasted like home cooking. The owner was gracious and so proud of his cooking. My son asked for a second bowl and got one without question. I cannot praise the guide enough. It was as though we had known each other for years. So comfortable and friendly. Well worth the price.
