Latvian food tasting tour at Riga Central market

Guna was a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide. She provided tasters of many traditional foods and some drinks, explaining a little about the history of these. She also answered questions on the history of Riga. Once in central market she guided us around the different hangers, explaining their different uses and the history of the market. Our tour ended with a sit-down lunch in one of the little restaurants in the market where there was a large amount of food provided for us to try (breads, cheeses, meats, fish, pickles). This was a very good tour to do on a wet and chilly afternoon. If I could, I’d give it 4.5 stars. Guna walked at a very quick pace which, once or twice, was a little difficult for the older members of our group to keep up with. We were also a reasonably sized group which, on occasion, made it a little difficult to hear what was being said in the busy market. That being said it was still a very enjoyable tour and one I definitely recommend.

Very good way to try food that you probably wouldn't normally want to pay for in case you don't like it. Apart from the cheese, chicken and chocolates, we also tried pigs snout and ears. Finished off with a shot of vodka, then into a restaurant for a platter of fish, cheese, meat and bread and a choice of drink (including beer) which was all excellent. The guide was very good and informative, and I would recommend the tour. We did get slightly confused with the meeting point, as we assumed it was the market, but it started in the old town, our fault for not reading the address correctly.

A great way to learn about Latvian culinary heritage. We were lucky that we were a small group (3 people), which made the interaction even livelier. Although the website considered the food to be the equivalent of a light lunch, I only had dinner (late) at night because of all the snacking during the tour ;). A great way for solo travellers to meet fellow foodies, and try foods you might not usually taste (lamprey, pickled cabbage with turmeric or cranberries,...). Enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide as well. Recommended!
