Explore the UNESCO-listed site of Pompeii on a walking tour
Your Amalfi Coast tour starts as you depart Rome by minivan for the drive south into the Campania region of southern Italy. This is a small-group tour with maximum of seven/eight people per minivan, which ensures a personalized experience. During the approximate 3-hour journey, your driver-guide will tell you about what to expect from the day. On your day trip to Pompeii enjoy a 2-hour guided tour of its World Heritage-listed ruins that were covered in volcanic ash from the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79 AD. As you explore with your guide, learn about the discovery of the ruins in the 18th century and hear stories about life in the village during the days of Ancient Rome. Your next destination is an authentic family-run oil mill that produces its own olive oil and where you can taste it in the coastal garden with a wonderful view of the Gulf of Naples! You will also enjoy a light lunch consisting of pasta with fresh tomatoes sauce or other home-grown seasonal vegetables, Caprese Salad (Mozzarella cheese and locally-produced tomatoes) water and, finally, limoncello (other drinks are not included). In the afternoon we’ll spend some time exploring Positano, where you can enjoy a walk around the delightful village with its white and pastel-colored houses littering the hillside. You can visit the beautiful beaches, where you can relax or have a swim, stroll around the ancient fishing port and see the splendid majolica dome of the church of Santa Maria Assunta. Your day trip then ends with the drive back to Rome.

Mido was a great driver. Amazing views and he was willing to take pics. He was knowledgeable and helpful. Thank you. Do this trip. You will love it. Lunch was delicious.
This is the first truly negative review I've ever written on any website. The reason? Our driver was reckless and dangerously fatigued. Driving aside, I still wouldn't recommend the experience. Our tour of Pompeii was disappointing. (see more below)
This experience involves a lot of time in a van - roughly 7 hours total in one day (we were gone for 13 hours total). The amount of driving isn't inherently a problem - Pompeii and the Amalfi coast are a long drive from Rome, and traffic seems fairly common. So, if you want to visit Pompeii and the Amalfi coast in a single day from Rome, you're going to be in for a lot of driving.
However, 7 hours of driving is terrifying when your driver is reckless and dangerously fatigued. At first, the driver was just very aggressive and somewhat reckless. He drove 150 kph in a 100 kph zone and constantly texted while driving. We asked the driver to slow down and stop texting (and he did, but only for about 5 minutes). But things got worse on our way to the Amalfi coast, when we encountered some traffic. To make up for lost time, the driver increasingly sped around the many tight one-lane turns along the cost, passing vehicles along the way. This was made more terrifying because the road to the Amalfi coast is along a sheer cliff that is over one hundred feet above the water. The driving was so reckless that we clipped the two foot barrier that separates the vehicle from a 150 foot drop into the sea.
The drive back to Rome was even worse. Our driver was so fatigued that he repeatedly slapped himself to wake himself up. We were terrified that he was going to fall asleep at the wheel, so we continued to try to talk to him for the 3 hour drive back to Rome. We even asked the driver to drop us off several miles away from our place, so we could avoid staying in the car with him.
Dangerous driving aside, the rest of our day ranged from enjoyable to disappointing. Even with an ocean of tourists, the Amalfi Coast is beautiful, and it was great to visit (albeit for only an hour). However, the tour of Pompeii was very disappointing. We missed most of the best locations. I felt like our tour guide was deliberately pushing us away from the best locations so other visitors could have a better experience. If I had to do it again, I would have just done a self-guided tour in Pompeii.
I don't want to identify our driver by name in this review, but if anyone at Viator is listening, I can provide additional information.
Dear Client ,
I've read with great attention to your feedback and if you can please write directly to me via our Avventure Bellissime web site , so that I can collect more information about you and the day you took the tour, so that I can also identify the driver . It is our priority to provide enjoyable and safe tours to all our clients and we have done so for almost 20 years .
This said , in this occasion and without further information , I can only say that all our drivers are professional drivers and work on a rotation basis , therefore never doing more than 3 Pompeii and Amalfi Day tours weekly . In regards to speed , they all have strict guidelines to follow and moreover if they are stopped by the police , they can loose their driving licence and therefore their job . Moreover when and if they get fined , they have to pay the fines themselves , that in case of speeding are very high and in the worst scenarios they can have their driving licence taken away .
In regards to the Pompeii tour , our tour guide is an official and experienced guide of Pompeii. We've received over the years many positive reviews about our guide . Certainly knowing the site very well , he tries always to plan the tour according to the amount of visitors touring the site at the same time so to offer our guests the most intimate experience of the site that is possible . Our tour covers the highlights of Pompeii in 2 hrs . For a more in depht tour of Pompeii , I agree that more time should be dedicated to the site , although in 2 hrs we cover all the major and most important sites Pompeii is famous for , giving a good understanding of all various areas of this extraordinary roman city .
I look forward to hearing from you with additional information so that I can further investigate .
Roberto was a good driver and picked us up promptly at our AirBNB. Roberto took us to Positano and to a wonderful lunch overlooking the ocean. Once we got to Pompeii we met up with Daniele our guide. Daniele grew up in the area and was knowledgeable about Pompeii. Was an amazing experience and highly recommend!
The time to get to the Amalfi coast versus the experience there is a neutral experience. A long time in a car for little return in my n=mind. Would have been much happier spending all the time at Pompeii. The tour guides were all good no negative refection on them.
Dear Client ,
Thank you for your feedback on our small group Pompeii and Amalfi day trip from Rome . I'm glad you've enjoyed both our driver-guide and our guide for the Pompeii Tour , and sorry you did not enjoy so much the Amalfi coast . I understand it is a long Day as the Amalfi coast is quite distant from Rome , but it is one of the most beautiful coastlines of Italy and most clients appreciate the long effort to h spend some time in this enchanting part of Italy .
This tour was everything we were expecting. Driver was punctual, polite and informative. We stopped at beautiful spots to take in the sights, enjoyed a delicious lunch and had a great tour of Pompei. There is lots of driving but no getting around that.
Where do I start?
1. Driver arrived in a Mercedes van. Fine, except 6 people were already in, leaving my wife and I to sit in the front seat. The front seat is not designed for 2 adults as passengers. My wife (who is just over 5 ft tall) sat in the middle seat with her knees jammed into the dash, and had no headrest. I had to sit angled to give her some room. Mind you, the drive time was about 7 1/2 hours round trip.
2. At the first stop, I complained to the driver, who immediately became defensive and started arguing with me that the van was designed to hold 8 passengers. Maybe if the 2 in the front are children
3. The driver drove like a madman. Using Waze, I clocked him at over 90 mph (in a 9-person van) on several occasions, and once at 97 mph (156 kmh). And he was constantly texting while doing this.
4. Your "Plenty of free time" in Positano is a little over an hour.
Only good part was that the guide in Pompeii was very good.

Very good tour and guide but guide talked a little too much during the drive to and from 6 hours!. Pompeii stop was excellent as was the separate guide. Lunch stop included was great in between Positano and Pompeii.
In general, the tour was awesome!
The day, we've waited outside our hotel for 30 mins the pick up time was from 6:45-7:15. However, we didn't know we were being picked up last and was kind of scared that we got left behind. Luckily, there was an emergency phone no. not the normal office phone no, and only till then we knew we were picked up last. So if anything happens for your during the pickup, be sure to call the emergency phone no.
I'm glad I joined this semi-private tour, instead of the ones where there's lots of people. There was a total of 8 of us, plus the driver/tour guide George. So we were on a mini-van, which later turned out to become a blessing as there were many twists and turns in the roads of Almalfi Coast, being in a mini-van like ours makes it safer and more efficient to drive on the road.
The lunch was simple but wonderful. We were at a family-run restaurant in the mountains, and were served margherita and pastas. Oh my... they were heavenly. I suspect it's because the ingredients were grown near by e.g. the tomatoes. I've never had such a good pizza and tomato-sauce based pasta in my life. The restaurant also sells their own olive oil, so you can get some i didn't get any though
Our driver/tour guide was George. He's a very good driver, keeping us safe and sound, and driving with a comfortable speed. However, I've learnt nothing about Italy from him. He barely talked to us or introduced places. We felt that he doesn't like his job. He seems like he doesnt want to be there. He can keep to his driving though.
At Pompeii, we met with another tour guide named Hector. He was great and was one of the highlights of the trip. I learnt so much about Pompeii and he was quite funny and introduced us to interesting spots. He told us stories of what happened during those times. It was a very enjoyable tour at Pompeii.
Overall, it was a good trip because of the food, driver, guide at Pompeii, our other fun passengers... but the tour guide could be improved. At least, let us listen to some audio introduction of the places would be good....
Some more tips:
- Lunch is at 1:30/2pm. So make sure you grab some food at the stops before that otherwise you'll be starving
This day trip allowed us to cover a ton of ground that would not have been possible if we rented a car ourselves. Our driver George forgive me, not sure if I am spelling his name correctly, was outstanding - very professional and a gentleman. He arrived on time and drove responsibly that is a challenge in the traffic of Rome and all of the scooters! to our destination. The first stop in Pasitano was as picturesque as could be - the coastline and town are nestled up a steep hill loaded with stores and restaurants. The next stop was at a family owned Olive farm, where the service, staff, food and wine made a perfect lunch overlooking the island of Capri!! The next stop was Pompeii and getting straight to the tour was great no lines and an outstanding guide to lead the way. Pompeii was awe inspiring and so much to take in, but our guide was keen on offering up information in abundant quantities. I greatly appreciate the professionalism of the Pompeii guides and the respect that they have for the ancient ruins as they are quick to tell imposing groups and individuals to make space for their tour.
The trip home was just as smooth as the trip in and concluded a day that covered so much ground and history - worth the money : If you are staying in Rome and want to have an awesome experience, this tour is most definitely for you!
We were able to participate in the Positano Pompeii tour while visiting Rome. It was a great experience with the exception of the Pompeii portion. Our driver Ruperto was an absolute delight. He was very knowledgeable and pleasant while driving us to our destinations taking time to identify a few points of interest and facts as we passed them by. Positano was lovely and very scenic. We thoroughly enjoyed walking around the town and getting to see the beach. The restaurant we were taken to The Patriarce was AMAZING quaint and With a strong sense of Italian Flavors. You will not try better olive oil and lemoncello than here. Unfortunately our tour of Pompeii did not go as well. Our tour guide Cayetano was rude arrogant and condescending. There were older people and our group who at times struggled with the many steps and uphill climbs. He felt it appropriate to tell them they were wasting his time and a burden on the rest of the group as invalids. Which they were not. On more than one occasion he told our group we were not allowed to speak while on the tour. Completely ruined the experience for us and many in our group. It is unfortunate as the rest of the day was wonderful.
