Stop At:
Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta - Duomo di San Gimignano
the Cathedral of San Gimignano is without a doubt one of the city’s most important monuments. The interior walls of the church are entirely lined with frescoes that recount Stories of the New and Old Testaments painted by illustrious artists of the fourteenth-century Sienese school as Lippo and Federico Memmi, Bartolo di Fredi etc. This Basilica also holds a precious Renaissance jewel, the Chapel of Santa Fina, where three famous Florentine artists worked: an architect, Giuliano da Maiano, a sculptor, Benedetto da Maiano and a painter, Domenico Ghirlandaio. Saint Fina, she was just a girl that contracted a serious illness and chose to spend the rest of her days lying on a wooden board that at the moment of her death burst into bloom with violets. Every year in March the violets of Santa Fina blossom luxuriant amidst the hard stone towers that give this medieval city its famous profile. Many legends and traditions are hidden inside the wall of San Gimignano, through its narrow streets, palaces and towers...

Our tour guide Demetra took us...

, Nov 2017
Our tour guide Demetra took us around San Gimignano, a quaint hill town in the Tuscany region deserving of its UNESCO world heritage site designation. We met at Porta Giovanni, strolled the mostly-pedestrian streets, visited the Collegiata not to be missed with its well preserved frescoes. Also saw the towers of San Gimignano and why it is known as the medieval Manhattan of Italy and ending at the Piazza della Cisterna for gelato at Gelateria Dondoli. With some time left, we shopped for cheese their aged pecorino and pecorino fresco is amazing! and pottery Balducci Ceramica - non traditional colors/designs and a quick bite at an enoteca before we headed back to our hotel in Greve in Chianti. At par with most historical towns in Italy, be ready with your most comfortable walking shoes/sneakers, as the cobblestone streets, though nice to look at but after a few hours of walking them may prove to be a challenge to your feet. Also, weather wise, a good time to visit as temperature during our tour was right around 18C 64F, perfect fall weather. Demetra, was good, pleasant and nice. But personally, my wife and I would have liked a little more history, and more interesting stories to spice up the almost 2-hour tour. Overall, we would love to visit San Gimignano again.
