Departure Point

Jewell Gardens, Skagway
Take home a memorable souvenir of your Alaskan cruise when your cruise ship pulls into Skagway. Head to Jewell Gardens, located just outside the northeastern edge of downtown, about two miles (3 km) from the port. You can walk, take the Skagway city transit or bike from the port. This shore excursion is not covered by our worry-free policy, so please allow yourself plenty of time to enjoy the gardens and ensure your timely return to the port.

Your 2-hour glassblowing experience begins at the ‘hot shop,’ where the glassblowing takes place. Your gaffer (a nickname for a glassblower) shows you the equipment. Watch up-close a live demonstration of the process, and gain insight into the ancient art of transforming molten glass into ornaments, jewelry, dishes, vases, ornaments, dishes and more.

Then, try your own hand at blowing a glass ornament. Even better, Jewell Gardens will ship your ornament anywhere in the world — on the house — so you don’t have to worry about getting it home in one piece.

After the lesson, enjoy a guided tour of the glass gallery to check out more pieces of hand-blown glass, and then meander through the organic flower and vegetable gardens. Thirsty after the heat of glassblowing? Beer and wine are available for purchase at your own expense.

Or, visit the garden railway, where a model train from the White Pass & Yukon Route winds through a scaled-down version of old Skagway and then travels through mountains and forests.

Please note: A minimum of two people per booking is required.

The lesson we had was fantastic. A small group, and very nice personal attention. It was a very hands-on experience, and you get a great product at the end that's shipped straight to your house. Looking around the gardens themselves is also a great experience. There are so many interesting glass sculptures worked into the gardens. Lunch in their cafe was a little underwhelming as far as variety was concerned, but the food and drink was fantastic, a nice and refreshing light fare.

It's hard to begin to say just how amazing this excursion turned out. If your a fan of Chihuly or Fenton this is for you. Our itinerary was changed..we called Viatar before we left the port of call and they knew exactly what was going on and changed from Fri. to Sun.....no problem. Amy was our instructor and she was so patient and informative. We got off the boat, there was a shuttle right at the wharf 5.00 a person for all day. They knew immediately where we wanted to go but told us the Gardens didn't open til 10. They dropped us off in town so we had time to do a bit of shopping. They go right to the Jewell Gardens door for drop off and pickup. The gardens are beautiful so many flowers and glass pieces among the trees and flowers. Our pieces will be sent to our home, free as advertised.....of course I had to buy more and the shipping was reasonable for 2 pieces around 10. Recommend this excursion and Viator. If I go back to Skagway, I will definitely book this again without hesitation

My husband and I had a Glassblowing Lesson at Jewell Gardens, and we loved it tremendously. We were the only two booked for our lesson, and our instructor, Amy, took great care of us. She explained the safety procedures thoroughly, which we appreciated. She guided us through the process of creating our ornaments very patiently, making the entire process quite smooth. This was definitely a highlight of our cruise to Alaska, and we will certainly book it again the next time we visit Skagway.

This was a really fun afternoon event and quite different from all the other Alaskan sightseeing activities that have filled our schedule. We arrived in time to have lunch and dessert! at Poppies, walked through the beautiful gardens, and then participated in glassblowing. Our artist/instructor was great! He was very personable and supportive explaining the process we would follow, showing us the colors and patterns we could select for our creations and then individually guiding each student through making their own piece. We both had a great time and highly recommend a visit to Jewell Gardens -- and participating in glassblowing is a MUST!

We thoroughly enjoyed Jewell Gardens and our glassblowing lesson. The gardens are lovely and were in full bloom during our visit, so we wandered about while we waited for our glassblowing lesson. We also visited the tea room and had a little snack there. Our glassblowing lesson was awesome! Travis was extremely knowledgeable and positive as he worked with each of us to complete our ornaments. We had several design options from which to choose and can hardly wait for our ornaments to arrive in the mail!

This was my second time to the gardens. It is a very nice tour with the hands on glass blowing experience that I have never found to be available anywhere else. The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. They make the glass blowing seem very easy with their gentle guidance. Highly recommend.

I booked this lesson, so I could do something with my mom. We both seriously enjoyed the lesson and were thrilled with the ornaments we made. I highly recommend this excursion option.
