Not a Trip for Cruisers
, Oct 2019
I normally love "Hop On, Hop Off" Viator tours and have enjoyed several of them. This one for Stockholm, however, is a waste for cruise travelers! The first hour plus is just "on the bus"--no commentary--nothing but countryside to see. Once in Stockholm we were told that the bus would not take us back to the dock until 4 p.m. (which meant a 5:15 arrival!). My sister and I had spa appts. booked for 4 p.m. which meant we lost our appts. and had to pay 1/2 of the massage price! (We had planned to return to the boat at 3 p.m.) Once in Stockholm, there were some beautiful sites to see, but getting from one stop to another took forever in horrific traffic and we had to find our way back to Stop #12 for our trip back to the dock. It took us about 2 hours to get back from the center of town. Once at our stop, we waited a good hour in the freezing cold for our bus which parked a full block from the stop! It truly was not a great day! The drivers were very helpful, but could not help much. Many people were so confused and frustrated and a few older travelers even took a taxi back to the dock for over 150 euros!!! It needs to be made VERY CLEAR that a "Hop On, Hop Off" into Stockholm is a LONG bus ride both ways. It would be much better to take a ship-sponsored excursion.
So, this was a hop on hop off bus. The bus picked us up at the cruise terminal and then drove us to the city which took about an hour. On the tour map, it showed the cruise terminal as one of the stops on the route, however, when the bus driver skipped going back to the terminal I asked him why and he said they don't go there in the off season. I told him I was pick up there. He said, well you can take the public transit bus back! I was shocked and so I called the company. A man on the phone told me something different. He said all the bus drivers told us to be at a particular place at 3:30 for a ride back to the cruise terminal. I was never told this! His response was well now you know! We had to pay for a taxi to get us to the pick up place in time as the next hop o bus would not get us there in time. We were fearful of not getting back to the ship in time, which caused a lot of stress. Please be careful using this service as they did not seem to know what they were doing, and furthermore did not care about our experience.
This tour was a disaster. Each bus driver kept telling us this was not his/her company, and the 'proper' tour bus never showed up. But I have to say that Viator was very good about refunding the bus portion of our trip afterwards.
Stockholm is a beautiful city and i would like to return as one day was not enough to see the city. The hop-on-hop of was an excellent way to see the city. The bus comes to the vessel, the stop off locations are close to all the attractions.
