Meet your informative guide at the tour office to begin your 2.5-hour tour of the Te Anau glowworm caves. Start with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau before continuing underground to the cave system, located on the lake’s western shore. Upon arrival at the Cavern House, listen an interesting talk about the life cycle of the glowworm as well as the history of the caves. Your guide leads you on an exploration of the caves by footpath and small punt along the rushing underground river. Observe water-sculpted rock formations and drift into the glowworm grotto to marvel at the mysterious sight of thousands of tiny glowworms. Learn what feats of nature create the incandescence in the silent darkness. Afterward, you’re returned by boat across the lake to Te Anau.
Book in for the first night of your stay incase of poor weather conditions enquiring to be cancelled and rescheduled. There was flooding in the caves on my first night but thankfully there was space to be moved to the next day which worked out well. The boat journey across the lake was really cool. It was really dark and they turned the lights off in the boat too which was really pretty awesome! The stories about the glow worm caves were cool - and the guides very knowledgeable. The caves are super impressive
We really enjoyed The Glow Worm Cave tour. We did the later tour because it worked with our schedule better. It was nice they offered a tour later in the evening (7:00 pm) but the only downside was we couldn't see anything on the boat ride because it was dark out, not a big deal though! The tour itself was great and our guide (Thomas) was wonderful! We would highly recommend this tour and would do it again if we are ever back in Te Anau!
Couldve been 5 Stars EXCEPT a Patron had a very young baby, far too young to enter an immensely dark cavern that was crying and out of control BEFORE We even left the Visitors Centre. The Staff was explicit that quiet was required in the Cave, yet ALLOWED this less then one year old go on the Tour. The child SCREAMED the entire time, completely ruined our experience. Totally TRASHED IT. The Staff ALLOWED THIS TO OCCUR. We spent our 200 for a very poorly managed Tour- they got that Patrons money and OURS. There needs to be a MINIMUM AGE. The vast majority of Patrons are Adults. 10 had a lost experience, 2000 -so a family of 4 misbehaved
