Get an in-depth look at the weird, wonderful, world of Japanese ‘replica’ food during this 60-minute class in Asakusa. Anyone that’s spent time walking the streets of Japan will recognize these life-like food plates in most store windows. Now you’ll get a chance to see how it’s made for yourself as you learn to make a faux-tempura and imitation lettuce. One souvenir 'fake' food item is also included.
  • Learn the art behind Japan's fascinating 'replica' food during this fun-filled class
  • Discover the history of replica food, a practice you'll see first-hand in the windows of eateries all over Japan
  • Try your skill at making 'fake' tempura and artificial lettuce
  • Fun experience for kids and families
  • Take home one of your fake food creations as a souvenir at the end of class
Head to your class location at Kappabashi Show Room. You can choose from among a range of potential start times in both the morning and afternoon.

Start your course by learning the history of this strange and delightful Japanese art form, which was invented in 20th-century Japan and slowly worked its way into mainstream acceptance. Today nearly every eatery country-wide displays some form of ‘fake’ food in a window outside its entrance.

You’ll then get to make some fake food samples of your own. Try your hand at making two different types of ‘artificial’ tempura, choosing between different food items like pumpkin slices, eggplant slices, and deep-fried prawns. You’ll also get to make a carbon-copy replica of a head of lettuce. It will look so real you might even want to take a bite!

At the end of your class, take home one of your creations to help remember your fun introduction to amazing world of Japan’s replica food.

A fun, whirlwind hour of watching and participating in wax food making. It's quite fun and you get to take home your creations afterwards. Really enjoyed it, very friendly and helpful staff and class was offered in both japanese and english.

The actual experience was great, they had an English speaking associate that translated for us, and it's all very visual. It's a little misleading with the food, you're actually just putting the tempura coating on the shrimp/veggies, so you aren't making it all yourself. The lettuce is all handmade. Booking the experience was terrible. It would be much better if they just had the dates and times available and you could check which ones you wanted versus having to email the vendor and then they give away seats. We had to change our date 3 times because we didn't respond fast enough and then one of our people couldn't make it, but we had found someone else to come but the company cancelled the seat without our approval and refused to give a refund.

Extremely fun experience with great hands on instruction and help from the instructor. Would def. recommend for others to try, esp with the nice and unique souvenir creation to take home.

Such a fun quirky experience, making replica food from hot wax, either dropped from a height or delicately placed, stretched and folded in warm baths about 43 degree centigrade, then you get to take your creations home in authentic food containers. Translator was a good investment, whilst you can follow the instructions and complete the activity, but you wouldn't get the background and history of these uniquely Japanese window decorations. Some better instructions on how to get to the storefront or having the translator meet you at nearest train station would be beneficial.

This tour was amazing and it definitely helped to have a translator with us our translator was Kota. The experience felt authentic and we received a lot of information about the history of replica food in Japan. The staff at the shop were very friendly and it was easy to understand and follow, despite the language barrier. The food replica turned out great and looked just like the picture! Definitely do this if you have time while you're in Tokyo! It is only an hour or so and an experience you can't get anywhere else - also makes for a great souvenir!
