Ta Prohm

Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia

The Basics

Like other standout Angkor sights, Ta Prohm is included in the Angkor Archaeological Park admission ticket, available for durations between one day and a week. Many Angkor Wat tours or Siem Reap historical tours visit here, as do masses of independent travelers. It’s possible to tour Ta Prohm by bicycle, by tuk-tuk, by scooter, or in an air-conditioned car or minivan, often in conjunction with other Angkorian sites such as Angkor Wat, Banteay Srei, Banteay Kdei, Beng Mealea, Srah Srang, and Angkor Thom. History buffs will value the rich detail a guide can provide.

Absolutely amazing tour of the temples in Siem Reap with Sam. We saw a beautiful sunrise over Angkor Wat. Sam provided a great mix of religious and Cambodian history.

Ultimate Private Guided Tours, Sunrise Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm, Banteay Srei
We took the private sunrise tour with Mr. Boreth. He was extremely punctual with time and patient in explaining everything. He explained Cambodian history and linked it with every temple story- extremely informative and yet fun tour! We did not feel rushed anywhere. He also took care of providing water bottles etc (as it was extremely hot) and ensuring that we were comfortable everywhere. Well done!

This guided tour was absolutely wonderful - I can’t imagine seeing the temples any other way. Our guide Sam was incredible - he was a wealth of information and clearly has deep pride in his culture. We learned so much. He also took fantastic photos of us. Our driver was also so kind - we received water and cold towels after each temple visit, a necessity on such a hot day. I cannot recommend this experience enough!

Busy day (especially with kids) but worth it. They are unique places in the world and the atmosphere that surrounds you is amazing. A special thanks to the van driver and the guide Sorphrn who enriched the experience with her stories, sympathy and they customized the tour for us according to our requests. I highly recommend the experience with them.

Ultimate Angkor Wat Sunrise Tours, Bayon, Ta Prohm, Banteay Srei And Beng Mealea
Our guide Sam is a knowledgeable man who brought the wall carvings in the temples to life by telling us the details of the stories behind the carvings. He is patient, never hurrying us. He speaks good English and is good with the camera, helping us to "frame" all our pictures very interestingly.

It was worth to wake up at such early hour to see the spectacular sunrise in front of Angkor Wat. We had a great tour guide flexible, knowledgable who showed us the most memorable parts and told the stories of the ancient rulers, about the essence of spiritualism and the religious beliefs also the cultural aspects of ancient times. Angkor Wat is a very special and wild place to see, to visit - a memory for years!

Wow!! That’s how we felt after our magical sunrise and full day tour of Angkor temples. We chose a private tour to maximize flexibility on which temples to spend more time at. You definitely don’t want to rush things here. Especially if you enjoy photography! We were picked up from our Siem Riep Hotel promptly at 4:45 am. Because we had purchased our tickets separately the day before (they can also take you to buy tickets that morning if you wish), we headed straight to the sunrise look out point while it we still dark out. You need to get there early enough to grab a good spot. There were already many Angkor Wat sunrise fans strategically positioned by the time we arrived. Sunrise was spectacular. We spent about 5 hours in total at Angkor Wat. We had enough time to climb to the top for amazing views. After Angkor Wat, we had time for a much needed lunch break at one of the many eateries near the temple complex. We spent the afternoon visiting the Bayon and the magical Ta Prohm (Tomb Raider temple). Ta Prohm was truly magical with all the tree roots and vines twisted around ancient monuments in the afternoon sun. Do not miss it! We didn’t have time to visit Banteay Srei - but that’s because we were having too much fun visiting the other ones. We really appreciated the flexibility of a private tour for this reason. A larger group tour might have felt too rushed and less personalized. We got dropped back off at our hotel around 4:30 pm. It was definitely a long but super worthwhile day. Eleven hours…whew! Our guide Mean Chanra was the best. Not only was he a guru on Khmer history, he was very patient at making sure we walked around the temple complex safely. I was traveling with my mom who is older. So having a patient and attentive guide was very important to us. But what made our trip truly memorable was Mr. Chanra’s photography skills. He know the best places to take pictures. And he’s super skilled at taking “magic trick” shots with the iPhone (pano feature is amazing). I’ve never seen anything like it before. He even taught me a few photo tricks on the tour. When I look back at some of the pics we took that day, I can say it was truly a trip of a lifetime. I highly recommend this private tour of Angkor. And do ask for Mr. Chanra. He can make your National Geographic photo shots come true!

We truly enjoyed our day-long tour with Sam, who was incredibly knowledgeable and gave us so many insights into the temples, the history, and the culture. He took us to all of the better vantage areas for amazing views, family photos, and to see lesser known details. He truly gave us more than the standard tour guide facts. We were so impressed that we asked for another day to explore more of Cambodia's beautiful sights with him. Sam was patient and considerate and the whole family will have fond memories of an amazing trip to an incredible country that has such a rich history.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Ta Prohm is a must for any visitor to Siem Reap, with particular appeal for photographers, Instagrammers, and history lovers.

  • Ongoing renovation work and structural-protection measures mean that some of the most magical Ta Prohm shots are now only possible with Photoshop.

  • Please don’t give money to child beggars: It encourages their families to keep them out of school, perpetuating a cycle of poverty. Donate to a street-kids charity registered with ConCERT Cambodia instead.

  • Cambodia is a challenging destination for travelers who use wheelchairs. Due to stairs, Ta Prohm is not currently wheelchair-accessible.

How to Get There

Ta Prohm lies about 8 miles (13 kilometers) north of Siem Reap, within the Angkor Archaeological Park, about a 1-mile (1.5-kilometer) walk from Banteay Kdei and a bit farther from Srah Srang. There is no public transport to or within the park, so most travelers opt to join an organized tour or arrange a private driver or driver/guide with a motorbike, tuk-tuk, or air-conditioned vehicle.

When to Get There

Arguably second only to Angkor Wat as Siem Reap’s star attraction, Ta Prohm draws independent travelers and tour groups day in, day out, and all year round. It’s open from early morning to late afternoon seven days a week throughout the year. Your best chance of beating the crowds is to arrive as soon as it opens in the morning.

Beyond the Trees What Was Ta Prohm?

Once you look beyond the tree roots and the tumbled blocks of stone, the scale of Ta Prohm gradually becomes clear. During its heyday, it was a temple and monastery dedicated to the mother of the Khmer king Jayavarman VII. The spiritual epicenter of a city of more than 10,000 people, Ta Prohm was once home to more than 600 dancers and over 2,700 officials.
