Oskar Schindler's Factory (Fabryka Schindlera)
A wealthy German and member of the Nazi Party, Oskar Schindler bought the Emalia enamel factory in Krakow following the German invasion of Poland during World War II. By insisting that his Jewish employees were vital to the workforce and often advocating for them, he saved more than 1,000 people from death. Today, Oskar Schindler's Factory (Fabryka Schindlera), part of the City of Krakow Historical Museum, houses a highly emotive, interactive, and visually stunning permanent exhibition on the Nazi occupation of Krakow.

The Basics
Within the Schindler Factory, a series of exhibits tell the story of the Nazi occupation of Krakow from 1938 to 1944. Plan to spend up to two hours going through the exhibits. You can visit the Schindler Factory independently or stop by as part of a Krakow walking tour, a film sites walking tour, or a Jewish heritage tour. To see more, book a combo package that includes a guided tour to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum and a two-day museum pass that offers admission to Oskar Schindler's enamel factory.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • Admission to the Schindler Factory is free on Mondays, but entry and hours are limited.
  • It's best to book tickets in advance online, as same-day tickets may not be available.
  • Note that the Schindler Factory closes early on the first Monday of the month.
  • The last tickets are sold an hour and a half before closing time.
  • English explanations are available throughout the museum.

How to Get to Oskar Schindler's Factory
The Schindler Factory is located on Lipowa Street, several miles southeast of Krakow's Old Town. If you are not visiting on a tour, public transport is available by bus or tram. Take the bus to the Krakowska Akademia stop on Herlinga Grudzinskiego street, or take tram 7, 13, or 24 to Ghetto Heroes Square (Plac Bohaterow Getta).

When to Get There
Oskar Schindler's Factory is open throughout the year, with extended hours from April 1 to Oct. 31. It is busiest on weekends and holidays.

Krakow's Jewish Heritage and Schindler's List
To learn more about Krakow's Jewish heritage and the significance of Oskar Schindler's actions during World War II, visit the Jewish Quarter (Kazimierz) and view the 33 memorial chairs in Ghetto Heroes Square, which symbolize the tragedy of the Holocaust. Also check out the Remuh Synagogue and Cemetery, the oldest in the city, and stroll along Szeroka Street, the heart of Kazimierz, to see remnants of the old ghetto wall. Finally, follow in Schindler's footsteps and visit several real-life filming locations used for Schindler's List, the 1993 Steven Spielberg film that immortalized him.

Jewish Quarter, Oskar Schindler's sites and Kraków under Nazi occupation

Jewish Quarter, Oskar Schindler's sites and Kraków under Nazi occupation

star-5
In the beginning we go to see the very well preserved medieval Jewish quarter in Kazimierz, with its most interesting, ancient streets: Meisselsa, Józefa and Szeroka. Having this background we go over the Wisła (Vistula) River to find out the history of the Closed Jewish District (ghetto) in Podgórze. We also see the remaining parts of the ghetto wall in a very striking "matsevah-like" shape. Then we visit the historical museum in the former Schindler's Factory in Zabłocie. The new (opened in 2010), interactive exhibition shows how Kraków looked like days before WWII started and how WWII affected its people. Finally we visit the area of the concentration and labour camp in Płaszów, the monument and a villa where infamous commandant SS-Hauptsturmführer Amon Goeth (Ralph Fiennes in the movie) used to live.

Private guided walking tour of Kazimierz, the former Jewish Quarter

Private guided walking tour of Kazimierz, the former Jewish Quarter

The former Jewish quarter in Kazimierz (district of Kraków) is one of the best preserved Jewish quarters in Europe. Kazimierz (name after Kazimierz the Great, the last Piast and one of the greatest rulers in Polish history) used to be an independent city and from 15th century, a flourishing centre of Jewish religion and culture. The policy of religious tolerance allowed diverse groups of Jewish refugees from all over Europe to come and settle in Poland. Kazimierz became a safe paradise, dominated with the Jews. Today, however very few Jews live in Kazimierz, the district plays role of the artistic centre of Krakow and lots of bars, cafes and Jewish style restaurants help to feel its atmosphere. Your guide will also help you to recognize some of the sights that appeared in the Oscars winning "Schindler's list" movie which was shot in this area.
