The Basics

A sail down the Grand Canal is a trip through centuries of Venetian history, as historic palaces dating from the 13th to the 18th centuries rise out of the water along most of the route. Though stretches of the canal are lined with walkways, many of the important landmarks can be seen only from the water, so a small-group Grand Canal boat tour or combination walking-and-canal tour is by far the best way to go. For a historical tour of the canal, opt for a daytime sightseeing tour so you can see the ornate facades of Venice’s famous palaces. For a romantic journey, choose a moonlit gondola ride. And for a truly Venetian experience, opt for a gondola ride with a serenade!

A perfect intro to Venice
This was a fantastic tour! Cristina was very warm and welcoming, and extremely knowledgeable about the local area and the history of Venice. I was so glad to have her as a guide, as she pointed out so many things I would never have noticed by myself, and gave us lots of recommendations for things to explore ourselves after the tour as well. A great introduction to the city. Thank you for a lovely day!

Venice: Grand Canal by Gondola with commentary
The first scheduled it for the morning, but couldn’t find the meeting place in time & missed the tour. We had to pay for another one (as there are no re-schedule options). The second one was wonderful, the guide knowledgeable, and the gondolier was very pleasant.

Very relaxing, and great scenery but I was a little cold. Should have brought a blanket. The guide (Luca) was very nice

Grand Canal boat tour and Murano glass experience with Hotel pick up
This was a great trip. The Staff were most helpful getting us on and off the boat, as we are older, and certainly needed the assistance. We both love to watch glass being created, and the people at the glass factory were most helpful and considerate.

Venice Canal Cruise: 2-Hour Grand Canal and Secret Canals Semi-Private tour
The tour was amazing and just what we were looking for. Nice chance to explore outside of city center and check out other areas. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and extremely friendly. Shared tour but ended up being private as noone else was on the boat. 10/10!

Venice: Grand Canal by Gondola with commentary
This tour was great! We were on the water for the full 30 minutes. The guide was nice and answered any questions we asked. We picked the tour without the commentary so the guide was over all quiet but was still there to answer questions. It was romantic going under all the bridges and just seeing all Venice has to offer!

Grand Canal boat tour and Murano glass experience with Hotel pick up
Fantastic and knowledgable guide and driver took us on a well versed tour of the Grande Canal. He dropped us of at a beautiful factory in Murano, where we got a personal guide, denonstration and met the owner of the Factory. My teenaged daughters and I enjoyed an experience of a lifetime. We were also taken on a tour of the smaller, beautiful neighborhoods on our way back to hotel with tips on the best places to eat. Highly reconmend.

A short little taste of gondola, needs better Covid protocol

Venice: Grand Canal by Gondola with commentary
A nice little taste of gondola, great for a solo traveler. It’s short but sweet. You don’t enter the grand canal FYI. I think there are cheaper shared gondola rides available actually (if you check near St Mark vaporetto stop nearby) but this wasn’t bad. They did not check temps or green passes and my fellow passengers took their masks off - yes we were outdoors but gondolas are tiny and someone coughed directly into my face which was not great.

I thought it was a bit expensive for a 30 minute ride. I was expecting something like champagne to drink.

Small Group Venice Grand Canal Panoramic Tour
the guide was knowledgeable and very informative, the trip was worth seeing and getting a feeling for size of the Grand Canal and the islands are and their locations. the boat ride was good and comfortable. The big issue was if you were on the inside you did not get any panoramic views and good photo shots. there were only 3 three seats on the back end and two in front with the driver and guide

Private Guided Tour: Venice Gondola Ride Including the Grand Canal
Not only beautiful, but also informative. Our guide noted history and architecture while our awesome gondolier glided our gondola through the Grand Canal and city waterways.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Most Grand Canal gondola rides begin or end in St. Mark’s Square, home to St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, and include a few picturesque minor canals along the way.

  • Alongside Rome and Florence as one of the most popular destinations in Italy, Venice can get extremely crowded. To avoid a long wait at the motor launch, book your Venice tour tickets in advance.

  • The palaces along the Grand Canal have architectural styles that span from the Byzantine to the Renaissance, and are best appreciated with an expert tour guide who can explain their history and importance.

  • Note that Venice and the Grand Canal feature a great number of bridges, many of which are not wheelchair accessible.

How to Get There

The Grand Canal snakes its way through the center of Venice from the train station to St. Mark’s Square. All of Venice is pedestrian only, so to get from anywhere in the city to the Grand Canal, you must either walk or take a boat.

The Islands of Venice

Venice is made up of over 100 small islands, so for a different perspective of this unique city on the water, take a boat tour to one of the quieter outlying islands such as Murano, famous for its glassblowing industry; Burano, known for its lace-making artisans; or Torcello, thought to be the first populated island the in Venetian lagoon.
