Start with pickup between 7:15am and 7:45am at the Muara Cruise Terminal, then travel to the Bandar Seri Begawan boat jetty to board an open-deck wooden boat—these slender boats are a primary means of transport for residents in the water villages that are propped up on elaborate stilts and supports.
Travel down the river with views of BSB’s modern center to one side, and the traditional-style stilt village to the other, with gleaming domes and minarets rising from the city’s many mosques. You’ll also pass the Royal Palace, Istana Nurul Iman, whose 1,788 rooms make it the largest residential palace in the world.
Continue into the mangroves that surround the city, watching for the monitor lizards, kingfishers, and mudskippers that thrive in the aquatic forest. The real highlight of the tour, though, are families of proboscis monkeys which often descend from their treetop perches in the early morning and evening. After watching for the “big nose” monkeys, begin the return trip to Bandar Seri Begawan, where you’ll meet a driver for transfer back to the cruise port.
