There are few more images iconic to Hawaii than a waterfall spilling through the rainforest, and on this scenic Waipio waterfall tour, you’ll have the chance to view some of the best, most famous waterfalls in Hawaii.
The tour begins when you’re picked up directly from your Kona or Waikoloa hotel, where you’ll drive towards historic Waipio Valley through the pasture lands of Parker Ranch. Upon arrival in Honoka’a, admire the small, old school atmosphere before boarding a 4-wheel drive vehicle, where you’ll explore a part of the Hawaiian Islands that’s known as the Valley of Kings.
You’ll navigate the rugged valley terrain towards the base of Hi’ilawe Falls, where you’ll stand amidst taro falls with an unforgettable view of the island’s tallest waterfall.
Having craned your neck to take in the falls, journey back up towards the top of the valley to the Waipio Valley Lookout, where you’ll soon enjoy a lunch of teriyaki chicken, grilled fish, seaweed salad and rice (vegetarian meals available upon request).
Relax on the serpentine drive to Hilo along the Hamakua Coast, before emerging at thundering Akaka Falls and its staggering drop. If weather permits, you will get to swim and kayak under a private waterfall to cool down after a short hike. You’ll next move over to Rainbow Falls, where the angle of light can often create a colorful rainbow in the mist, and also make a stop at a tropical fruit farm in Hilo where guests can sample seasonal fruit and fresh macadamia nuts.
The drive back to Kona is an adventure in itself, as you travel the infamous Saddle Road between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, climbing to high on the frigid, windswept moonscape. In winter, it’s common for both mountains to be covered with snow, and eventually you’ll drop back down towards Kona for a drop off back at your hotel.
This tour offered so much more than we expected! On our honeymoon, my wife and I sought an experience that wouldn't just show us the island from a bus window, but let us interact with its wonders. This excursion delivered. Our friendly guide, Dreu, picked us up from our hotel promptly, and for over 10 hours taught our small group about life on the island. Even during the longer stretches of driving there was never a dull moment with Dreu. We tasted a variety of spices on a farm, enjoyed fresh lychee, cracked our own macadamia nuts, sampled local coffee, and, of course, visited several waterfalls, and even swam in one (and jumped off the rock just like the photo!). They provided paddle boards, which we had a blast on. Waipio Valley was simply stunning, from afar, and through an intimate drive through the lush neighborhoods at its base.
I really enjoyed this tour. We got lots of background on the volcanoes themselves, the climate, history, etc. Our guides were very informative and we definitely learned alot. I liked the Waipio Valley and all of the waterfalls the best. You even get to swim in a private waterfall. I also got to try and purchase macadamia nut honey for the 1st time. I highly recommend this tour, you'll get some great experiences and some beautiful pictures.
The trip to Waipio Valley exceeded my expecrtations! Beautiful flowers, historical details, ecology and geology details. Restroom stops abundant. Akaka Falls beautiful in the light rain. Bring your own rain jacket because the one provided made me sweat! Rainbow Falls from the non-public side was beautiful too!
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the wonders of Hawaii through the knowledgeable and capable narration of our guide Keith from Wasabi Tours! From a farm to waterfalls to the wonders of the beautiful valley we visited, the tour was very inclusive and was the highlight of our vacation!
Our guide Drew as fantastic. His knowledge of the island, water falls, flora and fauna was extensive and he was willing to share. His sense of humour kept us alert. The water falls were beautiful even though the weather was a bit drizzly. The Waipio was also fantastic and we learned a lot while we went through rivers and streams seeing the beauty of it. A must for everyone
