What To Expect

Depart Dublin early to get maximum time at your first stop of the day – Kilkenny Castle. Built in the 12th century, this Anglo-Norman castle stands dramatically along the River Nore, dominating the backdrop of Kilkenny city. Tour the castle at your own pace, exploring the renovated chambers and corridors, and then meander through the enchanting rose garden before heading into town. At your leisure, explore the charming village of Kilkenny. A true mecca of medieval architecture, Kilkenny offers many splendid sights for the cultured explorer. Explore the Black Abbey, built in 1225, and the Hole in the Wall Elizabethan Tavern, both recently restored to their original design. And don’t miss St Francis Abbey Brewery, brewing Irish ales for more than eight centuries.

Following your Kilkenny tour, stop at the foot of the Wicklow Mountains, where you'll be able to see border collies corral sheep across the fields.

Afterward, head over the wild and rugged Wicklow Gap glacial valley for some spectacular views of the Wicklow Mountains National Park. Enjoy a unique photo opportunity with a scheduled stop at the top of the mountain. Gaze down through the centuries old passage way linking east and west Wicklow. Retrace the footsteps which the Celtic clans and St Kevin travelled when traveling through the forested countryside and view the park’s upper slopes, blanketed in heath and bog, before dipping down into the glacial valley of Glendalough.

Throughout history, visitors have come to ‘the valley of the two lakes’ for its mystical history, archaeology and unique wildlife. The monastic city of Glendalough, found in the 6th century by St. Kevin, was once an active locale featuring areas for manuscript writing and copying, an infirmary, guest houses, and a monastery. Now it offers guests a peek into Ireland’s rich cultural history. You’ll have approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes to journey through the monastic city before heading back to Dublin.

Included is a guided walking tour offered by your tour guide. For thousands of years people have been drawn to ‘the valley of the two lakes‘ for its spectacular scenery, rich history, archaeology and abundant wildlife. Glendalough is a remarkable place that will still your mind, inspire your heart and fill your soul. The Monastic Site dates from 600AD original established by Saint Kevin. Your guide will walk and guide you though the site recounting old stories and folklore. There old church ruins, the round towers, ancient graveyards and of course the beautiful scenery. The towers have a single entrance high up and the Monks would barricade themselves and their precious Bible Manuscripts in the tower specifically built to keep the Vikings raiding parties at bay secure from pillage and murder. Traveler Tips

You will want to bring your walking/hiking shoes to at least head up to the lower lake while you're there.
There is a lot of walking/hiking, especially at the Glendalough Monastic Settlement and Wicklow Mountains National Park, so I recommend boots if you have them.
I am sure if you ask the tour company, they can arrange a taxi to take you via the road to see the lake.

Amazing! Our guides, David and Jerry were very pleasant and made the trip much more informative and interactive. The trip was very well priced. I’ve never went on a day trip that was under €50 and this trip was for €32 so it was a pretty great value for money. All locations were breathtaking and we got to experience both nature and city life. Scenic walks in Wicklow and Glendalough & got to a see a medieval style city: Kilkenny! The trip was a great all rounder. Would 10/10 recommend.

Save for the end of your trip
Natalie_W, Nov 2021
I would save this trip for the end, after hitting other major sites in Ireland. The sheep dog trial was fun. It’s probably just me, but after walking to the lakes in Wicklow, I was too tired to stroll around Kilkenny, also doesn’t help that we didn’t get to make a proper stop for food until we got to Kilkenny which was already pretty late. Our tour guides were okay. Overall not a bad trip just would advise saving it for the end of your trip.
Response from Host, Nov 2021
Hello Natalie, Thank you for the review. Can I mention in response that during the winter months we reverse the tour and visit Glendalough & Wicklow in the morning. Resaon is the early sunset. In the winter the best day light to enjoy the countryside and the Glendalough Monastic site is during the morning and midday light. It is possible to buy lite breakfasts while visting Glendalough. The schdeuled arrival time to Kilkenny City is 2pm and we have a 2 hours 30 mins stop there.
Great experience

Richard and Joe are the absolute best! I greatly enjoyed the stories, information, expertise, adhd humor that they both brought. The scenery was beautiful and I feel like I got a glimpse of the real Ireland. By the end of the day both Richard and Joe felt like friends and as someone traveling alone, it was nice to feel the friendship for the day.
