    What To Expect

Your journey from Florence to the Cinque Terre starts by coach, where you can relax as your guide shares stories about the area. You'll hear tales about the Tuscan city of Lucca and its famous resident Puccini, before learning about the Cinque Terre and its five fishing villages—Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Monterosso and Riomaggiore—that form the national park.

After a short, two-hour drive, you'll begin your hike through the Cinque Terre on the hills above Manarola. With your guide to help lead you, you'll follow a scenic trail to Corniglia, which culminates in a steep climb of some 382 steps. Note: This charming region is natural and untouched, so there are no hand rails or safety rails, and paths often cut close to the cliff's edge. (if you choose the tour option without hiking, the train will be used instead to move between villages).

Once in Corniglia, you'll enjoy some free time where you can relax and refuel with these spectacular views, before continuing your journey with a hike to Vernazza, where you'll pass terraces of olive groves and colorful bars and cafes. Take a dip in the bay before heading to Monterosso by train, where you'll have free time to explore the beaches, wine shops and artisan goods famous to the village.

The final portion of your journey will include a boat ride (or train ride, depending on weather) to Riomaggiore, a village known for its candy-colored houses, as well as a final hike back to Manarola. Your day trip from Florence to the Cinque Terre ends with a coach ride back to the city.

    Borgo Storico di Manarola

Built in the valley of the torrente Groppo, until 1950 the stream which runs through the town was completely uncovered and 11 stone bridges allowed the people to cross from one side to the other. Over the next thirty years the stream was gradually covered over. The ancient village was destroyed by Saracen pirates (in 849) and the surviving people fled in land to live. When the seas were made safe again in the 11th century, people came back to settle here under the protection of the Republic of Genova. By the 1200's cultivation of vines was not only established but the wine they produced was sought after. The church of San Lorenzo was begun in 1338. The patron saint is celebrated on the 10th of August with a procession through the streets carrying a statue of him. The castle which protected the town from pirates is now a private home, you can see the garden from the panoramic walk, it is on the rock immediately above the port. Manarola is now famous for its Christmas nativity scene which is the biggest in the world. Figures outlined in thousands of lights cover the hillside. Also an Easter scene is made.

    What a day!

Wow, the day is long but sooo worth it. We got lucky and had great weather for the end of December. The guides were so nice and the scenery just can't compare. Lots of walking up and down and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
    Fantastic guide and amazing tour!

Our tour guide Chris was amazing. Definitely opt for the hike, but it does get a little intense at some points. Totally worth it and one of the best tours I’ve ever been on.
    Not to be missed!

Trip was fantastic. Manolo was a great tour guide and make the trip a delight. Day was beautiful and we got to take the boat at the end of the day. Definitely take.

Cinque Terre is beautiful and our guides from Walkabout Florence are wonderful - they are knowledge, informative and making sure we get all the great photos! I am impressed how they managed to keep the group in tact despite the tour was carried on trains.
Whirlwind of beauty, history, and delicacies!
    Meghan_M, Dec 2021
We decided to take this trip because 1) Visiting Cinque Terre in a limited amount of time would not have been possible without this tour 2) We couldn’t decide which towns to visit 3) We wanted to learn about the area as well as enjoy it. This was one memorable day!!!! Cris was absolutely wonderful - funny, engaging, knowledgeable! He gave us a ton of information not only about Cinque Terre but also of the towns and areas along the way during the bus drive. His food recommendations were excellent - go where he tells you! The hike was super easy for us and we were lucky to take the boat back at the end. Book this tour!
    Awe Inspiring views, great hike!

Chris and Gabriel were great guides! They told us what to expect at each stop and kept us on track throughout the day. The lunch that they thoughtfully arranged was delicious and one of our best during our week long trip in Italy! I appreciated Gabriel taking time during our bus ride back to Florence to chat with us and other passengers about the day and answer any questions we had. I would recommend this tour! It is a beautiful area and an enjoyable hike!
Do this tour! You won’t be disappointed!

This tour was amazing! It was our favorite day trip from Florence while we visited Italy! We were traveling in November so opted to use the train between villages but did get to hike between 2 of the villages due to the nice day we had. The views were incredible and our guides were very knowledgeable about the history of the area. Our small group guide was Manola and he was great! So laid back and accommodating. The bus ride to the area took about 2 hours but was a very nice double decker bus. We want to go back during the summer and hike between each village.
An exhilarating hike …at Cinque Terre!
    sherynongyc, Nov 2021
Amazing experience and Chris our guide is one of the best and most informative! He knows Cinque Terre through and through! Lively commentary and totally animated!
A nice workout coupled with sightseeing and lunch
    Stephanie_B, Nov 2021
Dec is off peak season hence there’s no crowd and many of the town’s shops/restaurants are closed. It can get very cold due to the winds so make sure have to prepare for that. Choice of footwear is very important in this activity. The paths are rocky, muddy and wet. Regular sneakers may not have the grip. Really recommended for active individuals. The hike is Not suited for young kids and elderly. Option to take the bus/train instead to get to the different towns. Our guide Chris is excellent as he shares his in-depth knowledge of not just Cinque Terre but also towns we passed by on the way there on coach.
