Meet your guide at the Schlossbergplatz in Graz, and start your 1.5-hour tour of Schlossberg Hill.
On route, learn about the history of the forested hill and how it was once topped by vast medieval fortifications. Hear how they were largely destroyed by Napoleon in 1809, leaving only a few remnants, including a Clock Tower and Bell Tower.
Ride the funicular up the wooded slopes, admiring the views of medieval Graz through the glass-roofed cabin. Alternatively, take the glass lift to the summit through the rocky core of the hill.
On arrival, follow your guide to a terrace to admire the spectacular panoramas over Graz’ roofscapes. Capture the scenery on camera, and check out many of the sights of the hill. Ascend the creaky wooden stairs of the 16th-century Bell Tower, and admire its gigantic Liesl bell, cast from Turkish cannon balls.
See the Gothic Gate of the old fortress, and stroll through ornamental gardens to the 16th-century Clock Tower. Head inside to hear the rattling, 300-year-old mechanism, and hear how the clock face was originally built with only hour hands.
After about 1.5 hours of exploring, your tour then concludes.
