Your tour starts with hotel pickup in Key West by shuttle van for the 15-minute ride to Geiger Key. When you arrive, listen to some paddling instructions from your guide, and receive a dry bag for your personal belongings. Bottled water and equipment are included, and an easy-access ramp with a handrail provides a safe way to board your kayak.
After easing into the water with the help of your guide, start paddling through the mangrove trails, creeks, and flats surrounding Geiger Key. Watch for a variety of birds and marine animals such as sea stars along the prop roots, continuing across the shallow grass flats where you may spot rays, barracudas, or nurse sharks swimming in 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 0.9 meters) of water.
Then glide into a hard-bottom community to look for upside down jellyfish, sea snails, and conch before starting the paddle back to the starting point. There are six different routes your guide will choose from to make sure you have the easiest return paddle possible, hopefully avoiding paddling into the wind. Throughout your tour, learn from your guide about this tropical ecosystem and how the mangrove islands and seagrass beds serve as a marine nursery for Key West’s fish, birds, and other creatures.
When you return to land, restrooms and a freshwater rinse are available for you to use. Total tour time is four hours with two hours spent on the water. No experience is necessary.
