Lisbon has something for everyone. If this is your first time visiting, experience must see monuments including the commanding St George’s Castle, Lisbon Cathedral, or UNESCO World Heritage Belém Tower. For seasoned veterans of the city, perhaps explore a new side of Lisbon. Check-out off the beaten path neighborhoods like Martim Moniz a lively area with a mix of immigrant communities, or indulge Lisbon cuisine in the trendy district of Alcântara.

Half-Day Tour Example Itinerary:9am: Meet your guide at a central Lisbon location and head for the vintage Lisbon tram 28 for a ride up the hill to historic Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest districts. From here, enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the city.

10.30am: From your elevated position near the mighty St George’s Castle (São Jorge Castle), gaze down at Lisbon below. Listen as your guide share details about the various neighborhoods and explains the history of the city. Wind down towards the Moorish Alfama district, a labyrinth of winding, narrow streets. This lively area is full of popular restaurants and bars and the sounds of traditional Portuguese Fado music spills out onto the streets.
Take in Alfama’s top attractions, including the 12th-century Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa), The Doll Hospital (Hospital de Bonecas) and the Jesuit church of São Roque, which hides an ornate and expensively decorated interior behind its deceptively simple façade. Sample ginjinha (a sweet cherry liqueur), take photos of the colorful street art and stop into craft stores to see fine Portuguese tiles.
Full-Day Tour Example Itinerary:Begin with the same half-day itinerary, followed by the below.
1pm: If you’re a seafood lover, take a recommendation for your guide and dine in a riverfront restaurant that has won prizes for its innovative cuisine. After eating, wander through the downtown Baixa area, taking in the grand structures that were all built in the distinctive Pombaline style following the earthquake of 1755.
3pm: Spend some time looking around Belém Tower, Lisbon’s iconic riverside fortress. Enjoy a scenic cable car ride and nibble on sweet pastéis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts). Admire Lisbon’s awe-inspiring Monastery of St Jerome (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos) and peek into the National Coach Museum, home to a fabulous collection of history horse-drawn vehicles. See where the famous explorer Vasco da Gama set off on his expedition to India. As the day draws to a close, say goodbye to your guide at the prearranged departure point.

Andre was an amazing guide. Very knowledgeable and personable. He walked us all over Alfalma and Belen, purchased transit tickets, got us on the Metro, trams, and bus. Got us to eat Pasteis and recommended and excellent local restaurant. Thank you, Andre, for a perfect day.

The best tour I had on this trip. It was a walking tour. Overall took about 11 hours. The guide knew just about everything and everybody. Went to places that normal tourists never go. Spent a good amount of time in Alfama and had lunch there. There are a lot of hills you walk up and down. But I'm 69 and was able to do it just fine. Well worth the extra money. If you want to learn about Lisbon, take this tour.
