Masaya Volcano National Park was founded in the 1970s and was Nicaragua's first national park. Home to over 12 miles (20km) of hiking trails and roads, it contains 2 volcanoes with 5 craters between them. Wildlife like iguanas and monkeys abound, and it is one of the only active volcanos in the world that allows visitors to stand right on the lip of the crater. Learn about the region's history, both geological and cultural, from your guide and a visit to the onsite Ecological Museum.
Travel to the nearby town of Masaya to peruse the extensive craft market, where you'll find local handicrafts that make memorable souvenirs. After spending some free time touring the market, stop for lunch at your own expense.
