Visit a historical church, old cave dwellings and the historic city center
The tour goes around the Caveoso District of the Sassi of Matera. During the tour, it's possible to visit one cave dwelling and one church. At the end of the tour, you can visit the part of the historical center with Baroque churches.
Approach Matera from virtually any direction and your first glimpse of its famous Sassi is sure to stay in your memory forever. Haunting and beautiful, the Sassi sprawl below the rim of a yawning ravine like a giant nativity scene. The old town is simply unique and warrants at least a day of exploration and aimless wandering.
Although many buildings are crumbling and abandoned, others have been restored and transformed into cozy abodes, restaurants, and swish cave-hotels. On the cliff top, a new town is a lively place, with its elegant churches, palazzi and especially the pedestrianized Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
Did not happen as cancelled 5 min before time due as we were waiting for guide
, May 2019
This walk was booked 3 months in advance. It took a lot of phone calls and emails to get the local guide organisation to agree a meeting point (our hotel). Viator was asked to help but were unable to do so. Therefore I was not happy when the activity was cancelled 5 minutes before the due meeting time. I will not go through Viator again as they were helpless. I would also urge anyone organising anything in the region/country concerned to get their hotel to do so for them. We learnt the hard way as the 3 activities we organised via Viator were fraught with problems. In the end it was the hotel staff who saved our days in Matera and made sure we had a great time.
Bruna sp? was our guide and was extremely knowledgeable about the town, and history of the region. Was not aware that this included only the Sassi portion of the Matera area. The other area on the opposite side of the valley needs to be accessed by car, separately. Fascinating story how the Sassi part of town has been occupied over the years, right up until Bruna's mother and family were moved out in the 1960's. A must see!
The guide was very pleasant but she could have had more in depth knowledge of the city. The walk was at a good pace and not too demanding for our elderly companion. The guide's knowledge of the rupestre church was excellent.
