Milford Sound is one of the star attractions of New Zealand’s South Island, but its remote location makes it tricky to visit on a day tour. This full-day tour from Queenstown is ideal for those short on time, combining a thrilling drive along the famous Milford Road, a scenic cruise around the UNESCO-listed fjord, and the chance to spot seals, dolphins and penguins.
  • Full-day tour of Milford Sound from Queenstown
  • Marvel at the UNESCO-listed landscapes of the Fiordland National Park
  • Drive the spectacular Milford Road, one of New Zealand’s most famous drives
  • Enjoy a 2.5-hour cruise around the Milford Sound fjord
  • Admire natural wonders such as Mitre Peak, Bowen Falls, and Mount Pembroke
  • Spot native wildlife such as fur seals, dusky dolphins, and Fiordland crested penguins
  • Great-value tour includes hotel pick-up and round-trip transport from Queenstown
Your day begins with an early morning pick-up from your central Queenstown hotel by luxury coach. There’s a long journey ahead, so settle into your seats for the 4- to 5-hour drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound. Don’t worry about getting bored, though – you’ll be driving along the mountaintop Milford Road, one of New Zealand’s most spectacular roads, and there will be plenty of stops and photo opportunities along the way. As you soak up the scenery of the Fiordland National Park, listen as your driver points out natural wonders, and tells stories about the region’s fascinating history.

On arrival at Milford Sound, hop aboard a boat for a scenic 2.5-hour cruise around the fjord. Keep your camera close to hand as you pass natural wonders like the 525-foot (160-meter) high Bowen Falls, the striking hanging valley of Sinbad Gully, and the snow-capped peak of Mount Pembroke.

Climb onto your boat’s viewing platform to get a better view of the local wildlife, including colonies of fur seals, pods of dusky dolphins, and the rare Fiordland crested penguins. As you continue towards the Tasman Sea coast, pass beneath the distinctive 5,551-foot (1,692 meter) mountain of Mitre Peak, one of New Zealand’s most photographed landmarks.

As you turn back into Milford Sound, see the dramatic approach witnessed by the first settlers at the end of the 18th-century, and hear stories about their journey from your guide’s live on-board commentary.

Back on dry land, the coach will be waiting to take you back to Queenstown, where your tour ends with drop-off back at your hotel.

Comfortable bus and excellent driver. The company does a great job of collecting and dropping off all customers from the numerous hotels in Queenstown area. The tour of Milford sound was outstanding. A very comfortable boat tour and narration was worthwhile. The boat captain maneuvered us around the Sound was that we could see virtually all this spectacular nature site. Despite the long drive, the trip was very worthwhile!

Absolutely beautiful! Wonderful commentary on the bus ride down. Nice and timely stops for pictures and stretching legs. Then the highlight of the boat ride through the Sound and the beauty of the falls!

Awesome experience. It was a long day but incredibly worth it!

This tour was fantastic! Our tour guide/driver, Adrian, was very knowledgeable, funny, and entertaining on the drive to and from the Milford Sound. The boat tour on the Sound was INCREDIBLE! What a beautiful and amazing place -- we can't wait to go back again on our next trip to New Zealand with our kids. The boat tour also provided a great deal of knowledge with their Naturalist on board. This was a 12.5 hour day-long tour, but it was well worth the cost and the time.

It was a beautiful day the sound was absolutely gorgeous the bus broke down on the way there and I thought we had signed up for a nature cruise and thought we'd hear more about the animals on about the area as far as nature but it seem like just any other cruise so little disappointed with that we did see some seal so that was cool other than that it was just exactly like any other cruise down Milford sound

We thoroughly enjoyed the day even though it was long. If one had the time, it would be better to take a 2 or 3 day trip with a stay in Te Anau overnight.
