To see more of Rome’s ancient sights than what you find in the historical center, get out of the city on this electric-assist bicycle tour to the Ancient Appian Way. Check out the ruins of the Aurelian Walls, the thermal Baths of Caracalla and the ancient Roman aqueducts, all the while enjoying the countryside scenery without putting in too much effort. Choose from a shorter or longer duration tour, based on your schedule.
  • Electric–assist bicycle tour along the Ancient Appian Way in Rome
  • Cycle into the Roman countryside on this 27 km (17-mile), 70% off-road ride (intermediate level of difficulty)
  • Visit the 2nd-century San Callisto (or Saint Sebastian) catacombs and learn of Roman burial traditions (only on the 6-hour version of the tour)
  • Small-group tour limited to 10 people ensures personal attention from the guide

Why Travelers Choose This Tour

This tour is a wonderful off-the-beaten-track ride, the perfect excursion out of the city center.
Your electric, pedal-assisted bike tour starts at a central Rome location, where you’ll meet your guide and ride out of the city center to the Appian Way. Dating back to 312 BC, the Ancient Appian Way was constructed to connect Rome to Southern Italy and became one of the most important thoroughfares in the Roman Republic.

When you arrive at the start of the ancient road, you can relax and enjoy the scenery while riding on your electric-assist bike - allowing you to cover a lot of ground with minimal effort while you enjoy the fresh air of the Roman countryside. (Non-electric, carbon mountain bikes are available upon request.)

Follow your guide past ancient sites like the Thermal Baths of Caracalla, the Aurelian Walls, and the Park of the Aqueducts.

Admire rural Italy, and hear stories from your guide about the centuries-old ruins. During the longer tour option, enjoy a guided tour of the catacombs and learn about ancient Roman burial traditions as you delve inside the subterranean tunnels. Your tour concludes when you return to central Rome.

Very enjoyable

Tour was amazing! Loved the bike ride, 70% off roads, so peaceful and safe. Only slight let down was we cycled past a lot of ancient ruins, which we didn't get any info on, and although this would have increased the length of the tour, even just a few snippets would have been quite nice.

Lovely cycle trip out of Rome

What a fantastic trip. It is really easy to use the electric bikes, even for non-cyclists like one of our group. We were recommended by a friend before we went to Rome, and so we are glad we took their advice. Very interesting to see away from the hustle bustle of the city

Best Guided Tour In Rome

What a great way to see some parts of the city and it's history that you may otherwise miss. Our guide Luccio was patient and knowledgeable and set a comfortable pace for the group. The electrically assisted bikes made the riding relatively easy, even for inexperienced cyclists.

Dear SHollis, Thank you for this wonderful review of your experience on our e-bike tour of the Appian Way! We agree with you that it would be a real shame to miss out on this beautiful and peaceful part of Rome; and the e-bikes make it a lot more easy and comfortable indeed. We are also very happy to read your positive feedback for our guide Lucio. We are very lucky to have Lucio in our dedicated team of expert guides. We hope to welcome you again on one of our tours in the future! best wishes from Rome, Carmen

We had the very best time on our 6 hour tour yesterday! We booked our tour for 7 people and had the tour guide all to ourselves with Lucia (not sure of spelling) - he was brilliant and patient and so knowledgable. Our group had young and old but we were all able to manage the ride and we loved getting to see a whole other side of Rome, literally off the beaten track. We also loved our not so 'light lunch' and the hostess was extremely hospitable. Loved this very much and will recommend to all who visit Rome!!

Myself and my mother really enjoyed the bicycle tour of the Appian way. The electric bikes were comfortable and easy to use. Our guide Allessandro was very nice and extremely knowledgeable. We had a lovely relaxing day out and saw a side of Rome we would never seen otherwise. To be recommended!

Truly the BEST tour I've ever been on!

A friend of mine recommended this tour she had taken a month earlier. She said it was great, so we booked it. We show up, the woman at the front desk was SO lovely and even showed us to a bar for espresso before our trip. We were given a poncho, water, granola bar and a little enclosed basket on our bikes - she held all other items for us behind the desk. The mechanic was so nice and helped us adjust our bikes. Our guide, Alessandro, carefully showed us how to use the E-bike features and thoughtfully explained what to expect on our tour. After a quick chat, we're off! Alessandro, made sure to stop in every crosswalk, in front of traffic, to wave us on. It felt incredibly safe, even on the tricky streets of a very busy Rome. Along the way we learned all sorts of amazing historical facts and were given plenty of opportunities for photos. The catacomb tour was really interesting and the guide was very funny! Despite absolutely torrential downpours, Alessandro was calm, collected and very professional. He earned our trust and respect through showing us the safest possibly ways around in this very terrible weather. We finally got to lunch after some detours and it was PHENOMENAL. A cute little country club with some of the best dishes we had on our trip! After lunch, we have a few more stops and we ride through cute parks, seeing herds of sheep! We safely arrive back to the shop and he explains our path we took along the trip. Though we rode 19 miles, the bikes were absolutely fantastic and really made the journey feel like a breeze - I have severe asthma and I wasn't even remotely winded once. Overall, this experience was our unanimous favorite of our 9 day trip. Alessandro, the amazing tour, and the fun we had made my boyfriend and I book another e-bike tour in Florence in the following days. After this Appian Way tour, we vowed this will be a mandatory in any city we visit. It was a perfect way to spend a day! Thank you, thank you, thank you! - Molly & Bobby

I would do this tour every time in Italy. Our guide was fantastic and I learned so much history from him. The bike equipment was excellent as well as the lunch and route. Great way to spend the day and escape the crowded city of Rome to experience the beautiful parks, Ancient Appian roads, Roman aqueducts and tour the Catacombs.

Highly recommend. Professional and well organised tour. Lots of fun on the E-bike. Does require some riding on roads with traffic but our tour guide made safety a high priority.
