Morning Colosseum and Rome Gems Tour (3 hours):
Head to Rome’s Colosseum metro station at 8:45am in time for your 9am tour. With your group together, you’ll then set off on your tour.
Swing past the long entrance lines with your skip-the-line ticket to access the ancient amphitheater, and into the shoes of the famous gladiators who fought on the ground beneath your feet. Hear tales of Commodus and Spartacus, and emperors such as Augustus and Caesar who presided over the games. While the Colosseum was best known for its gladiatorial events, the arena was also used to host reenactments, plays, animal hunts, and even executions.
After hearing its history, continue to Via dei Fori Imperiali for a stroll past sights of Palatine Hill, and finish up by Piazza Venezia — home to the Vittorio Emanuele II monument. Continue to Torre di Largo Argentina to see where Julius Caesar was killed, then visit the Pantheon in Piazza dell Rotonda. Your tour ends in Piazza Navona, a square that’s symbolic of baroque Rome.
Afternoon Vatican Tour (3 hours):
Meet back with your guide at the agreed time for your Vatican City tour. With stories and curiosities ringing in your ears, you’ll step inside the world-famous Vatican Museums to discover the private art collections of the popes. Packed with treasures and antiquities, the museum complex is vast and houses some of the most influential pieces of Western artwork in the world. You’ll see frescoes, tapestries, paintings and sculptures as you explore.
Continue into the Sistine Chapel to admire the iconic frescoes by Michelangelo, then follow your guide inside St. Peter’s Basilica. Gaze at Bernini’s bronze baldachin, and stop to rub the foot of the bronze statue of St. Peter. Michelangelo’s La Pietà is another highlight. Your tour then ends in St. Peter’s Square near Bernini’s showpiece colonnade.
